Re: A Visual History of Burning Man
i just want to be clear, i understand why changes were made, i understand the need for safety in the large metropolis we have become, that is not my point really.
it's about the struggle.
the bar has been lowered and lowered to make it easier and more comfortable and convenient and commonplace and accessible.
fuck that.
it should be HARD....it should be DIFFICULT...it should be a STRUGGLE in order to truly appreciate what it means to GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE.
instead of trying to import defaultia and all of its gourmet trappings so you can duplicate the lavishness of dystopia why not make it a learning experience, by finding out what is inside of YOU?
Utilize and explore the notion of bare necessity in order to enhance the creativity that flourishes when one is forced to improvise and adapt.
the Danger i talk about is the fear of doing New Things....The Danger of Self Awareness...the Very Real Possibility that Things Could Go Wrong, at any Moment.
this is the Spice, and it must flow.
the moment we try to package it and make it easy to digest is the moment we lose our nutritional value.
when you get to Reno, you should thank your lucky stars that you made it out alive...
that's the secret sauce...there is no reward if it's not earned.
and this is why i rage against the dying of the fight...

Re: A Visual History of Burning Man
I began in 2001, and I still feel like a newb some days.
My danger~comfort level is about the same, with the exception of bucket swamp coolers and our propane oven.
I agree with Simon, the event is too accessible now, too many attending without a struggle other than ticket acquisition, too many bucket listers who are not invested in making the event better. Have a look, then off to another party, another beach, another happening. No, I am in it for the long haul. That's the difference.
A note for 2008, so windy, dusty, and white-outy, that the fire conclave performances in the Great Circle on Burn Night were cancelled. We had made our way to the Man with our fuel cart, on foot, guiding ourselves from lamppost to lamppost. The burn was delayed and very nearly did not happen.
Didn't the potties break the centrifuge/masticator at the sewage plant one year? Not many participants knew at the time, but it could have closed the event?

Re: A Visual History of Burning Man
i remember the white-out at night...
it was terrifying.
it was cold.
it also bonded us together, as we joined, as one, against the "suck"...
"It" actually BUILDS community, this shared experience, it makes the JOY all the more joyful.
the suck that preceded the double rainbow in 2007 was also "epic"....it's always "epic" when you're in the middle of it.
thats what makes it "epic".
and thats what also made that double rainbow so ecstatic, for all who saw it....we EARNED that double fucking Rainbow, G*d gave it to us, as a gift.
seriously.
the gift was the collective "woo" that arose throughout the entire city in a moment that all will remember who witnessed "it".
