Crochet works too!

HushVille was my number one suggestion, which was already mentioned by one of the members. If you are the neurotic type who is going to study everything in anticipation of being the world's bestest stealth virgin, they do take a lot of virgins and some of them won't be as neurotic about it as you, which may drive you crazy.
The walk-in camping area which is to the southeast of BRC is another good alternative, but only what you can carry into that area is allowed.
The outer rings (aka "the suburbs") around 3:45 and 8:15 are usually pretty quiet, they are midway between the entrance road and the sound camps at the edge of the city, and about the furthest midway point in the city between any of the artery roads that connect to the theme camp designated areas. So they just by location tend to be pretty quiet aside from at exodus. The outer ring at 3:45 is close to the walk-in camps, so you might find an area adjacent that's all cars and no people to camp behind.

I can knit and am also pleased by the idea of yarn-bombing the dome, though it is interfering with someone else's art, which is a huge no-no.

But it would be temporary, removable art, no?

It is interfering with another's art, you're correct, and for that reason shouldn't occur, notwithstanding that the adornments are easily removable and temporary in nature. In the outside world, I guess it can be hit and miss as to how the bombees viewed their bombers' efforts, but my gut feeling is that at Burning Man it could be used as licence to brutally gut all those responsible and to then pit any survivors against one another in the deknittified dome.
Back on track, the more I think about going this year, the more I am tying myself into knots about precisely what it is that I will bring to the event. Really, I am struggling to think whether it is a good idea to book the flight at all. Gah. The comment above regarding not turning up with too much expectations is likely very sage, but I've had an entire year's worth of thinking about it, and I now have a mountain of expectations piled above me, both in terms of what exactly I can contribute and what the experience will be like.

If you are referring to what gift you can bring, don't sweat it! Intangible gifts are the best, the wide smile of a first year in particular. Lend a hand here and there where it seems needed - help pitch a tent or pick up moop or zip-tie the door of an overflowing portopotty - and that is a real gift.apprehensive wrote:...the more I think about going this year, the more I am tying myself into knots about precisely what it is that I will bring to the event. As for expectations, I am definitely vocal about leaving these behind, precisely because I find it so damn hard! It is just as much advice to myself as everyone else. We are all human, nobody is perfect, etc etc. So it seems to me impossible to both be informed enough of the event to not be a drag and also not form some expectations.
Really, all I think you should ask yourself:
1) Does this Burning Man thing seem like it might be fun or interesting for me?
2) Can I figure out a way to cover my survival needs while out there?
1) is pretty personal, though you seem interested to me.
2) is purely logistical. There is a little under one month left. If you get to work, you can do it. Literally 10s of thousands of hippies do this every year. And many of us come back to do it again!

The problem with expectations is that you get focused on the expectations.
Then if they aren't met, that becomes the focus..........................and you'll miss out on Burning Man!!!

Oh I imagine the fine folks at the dome would welcome a bit of good natured asshatery.
