And yeah, I saw the message from our placer too... I'm very excited (and super impressed, placement had more applicatios than ever this year) to report that we have been placed, we will be on Cosimo at 4:45 (that is, on C block, somewhere between 4:30mand 5:00). see you on the playa!

Whew, it's been an insanely busy few weeks.... here are a few updates...





Filing and sanding all the edges on the synapse panels took forever...





Laser cutting some sign parts...





And the finished 3 foot by 4 foot sign...



And of course working on a set of open & closed signs





There's still a lot left to do, but we're heading into the home stretch and hope to get it all done in time! We'll see you out there, our location is on Cosimo at around 4:45!

The laser cutter is amazing. I've never seen anything like that and it just makes my woodworker's imagination go nuts.

I wonder if you could make a playa shade structure out of those, covered with a tarp or the silver netting stuff. I'd add a string of random blinking lights behind just the synapse parts. And chasing lights down the synapse connections arms. would be something to sit back and stare at.

Sure, you can make a shade structure out of wood . The only issues would be the size and the tools you're using. Laser cutters are limited by the size of the bed (and usually quite small), CNC routers (the tool I used to make the Synapse panels) have larger beds but the largest I have access to has a bed size of 4x8 feet. If I was to make something larger, I'd likely do it with some combination of hand tools on boards.

If you're going to cover your structure with aluminet, you would want to make sure the corners are sanded and routed. Aluminet is wonderful material, but it can be delicate. If it got snagged on a corner or some kind of splinter, it could develop a tear over the course of the week. That happened to me in 2013...nothing catastrophic, we ended up rigging a temp solution that year to stop the problem getting worse, and then developed a set of patches post event. The next year I routed all the corners and edges on the courtyard structure I was building, and everything was fine.

We are in the home stretch! The last bits of art are done, the paperwork appears to be in order, and we're prepping for imminent loading and launch within the week.
