OK ... It's decided! Road Trip!

I have spent just about the whole week/weekend working on this. uggg.. And looked at about every aspect of it.

Just reserved an SUV for the trip, Should be about $1200 total with fuel. And will have enough room to pack what I need.

Giving myself 4 Days to get there. Major Cities I will see on the way there are Ashville SC, Nashville TN, St Louis MO, Kansas City KS, Denver CO and Salt Lake City UT. Figured I would shoot for around 4am Monday Morning for Gate. (seems to be the best time to get there from what I have read)

Then I will have a whole 6 Days to get back If I leave Sept 5th/Monday. So may drop down to Las Vegas "never been" and go the southern route back.

Also have been tent shopping all weekend. But blood shot out my nose so I had to stop. :)

Super Stoked!! now off to work for the night.. ugg.

Yipee! Good luck with ticketing :) don't forget to factor deplayafication costs into your rental... from what I've read you can get hit with mean fees if you don't get the engine cleaned after spending the week in the dust. (But I could be wrong, so definitely fact check me. I am but a lowly googler at this point.)

Hey Zaxary,

I did but I'm hoping the 2600 mile drive back will blow at least some of it off :) You driving there too?

Sup Simon,

Oh I count on this. And I hear Zaxary has an RPG to take care of the burn your plan part ;)

naw seriously.. It is a hell of a road trip, but not my first that distance. It was something I had to make a final plan on the how to get there part. Now I can relax a bit more and have fun with the rest of it.

We are doing the same. Renting an RV, driving from Texas and taking 3.5 days to get there. We will also have a backup plan in case the RV decides to die on us before we get there. It will cost us a bit. We figure by the end of it all, we probably could have stayed at a 5 star resort on the coast of France, but then we would not be flushing playa dust out of our noses for a week, or three. Trade offs. They are what they are.

We plan on arriving at BM (can't stop giggling) 10:00.1 Sunday morning. I figure being in line for 8 or 9 hours will be a good break, or not. :)
I would like to treat my gas pedal as a binary operator and get the cooperation of everyone in front of me!

Thinking about it! It's looking like the best option for now, given the gear we need to be self reliant or, better still, community supportive in a very unfamiliar geography. Plus, like you, I'm keen on taking a ROAD TRIP! I've seen precious little of the U.S., so it would be fun to explore along the way. Then again, it's a bloody long drive (about as long as yours!), and I don't know if I have the kahunas to handle that much driving / navigating.

We still have the option of flying and having certain things shipped to us in Vegas or Reno, and one of the local burners here is contemplating driving a bus as far as Empire or thereabouts so that might become an option as well, but both those options put us in the position of having to figure out our travel into BRC (BxB? Rental? Taxi?) and having to balance our need for an ultra-lean setup with our need for self-sufficiency. Very complex decision making!

What made you settle on driving?

Hey Skuzzy

Oh you have it made with an RV. That should be a blast. I thought about it but it is So pricey, and just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Like you my original plan was to get there first thing Sunday morning. But then I thought since I'm tent camping and have no Idea really what to expect, that It would probably be better for me to get in Monday morning early. That way most of the camps and such are already set up so I would know what and who I was camping next to.

Can't wait to flush out some playa dust :)

Your not kidding about complex decision making.. I was getting kinda stressed. :)

thought about renting an RV, buying a new one.. flying in .. container.. buying a new suv "I have a 2 seater Mercedes" just wouldn't be practical for a road trip or the playa. So I ended up siting down and making a list of just the essentials I would need to bring for the week. Wow that was a big list quick. even bare bones. So I ended up just sitting back and asking myself what would be the least stressful. And Renting an SUV just seems like the obvious. Plus I think I am just about as excited for the road trip and some of the different cities as I am for BM. I gotta say since I put it in stone I feel much much better. Now for the fun stuff.
