The MegaPixels project will be one of the largest art installations in the history of Burning Man and will require the help of hundreds if not thousands of burners. We're organizing a theme camp that will be open to anyone and everyone who wants to take part in the project.
If you're interested send Airborne an email at [email protected] with a bit about yourself (how many year's you've been to the burn, where you're coming from, favorite color, etc). There's a lot of time between now and the burn so we'll be formalizing everything around May. In the meantime be sure that you've signed up with your name and number of pixels, and feel free to introduce yourself over on the eplaya thread (link to eplaya thread).
-----------
Also, the skydiving camp used an email list hosted through yahoo groups as an easy, no fuss way to keep people in touch. You can sign up to the group by sending an email to the group's subscribe address and it's really easy to manage. Using something like that rather than having people email me directly would probably be a lot better from a community-building point of view. Instead of introducing themselves to me they can introduce themselves to everyone who's interested.
I'm not sure if something like this is already in the works or not, just wanted to throw it out there.
I like the idea of setting up the yahoo group (or some easy to use list-serv) as well. There is also tribe... hmm...

I don't know if you would want to use it for the camp or not.. But I created it.

That's awesome! I was going to suggest doing it too, I'm sure that it'll come in handy. Before my last post I created a projectmegapixels and campmegapixels group on yahoo groups. Membership to the groups are moderated by me (to hopefully cut down on spam messages). I'd be happy to add you guys if you send me your email addresses/yahoo id's.regionalchaos wrote:http://tribes.tribe.net/megapixels

Regionalchaos, would you mind changing the first line of the second paragraph in the camp tab to read:
"We've started a mailing list on yahoo groups for people interested in the camp. To join send an email to [email protected]. Be sure to include a bit of information about yourself: where you're from, favorite color, best sunset you've ever seen, etc."
Great touch with the automatic countdown.
I apologize for the day or two lag between posts. I'm in city number two of seven for the month of March.

No worries airborne. I'll update the site as soon as I can. I just got back from a great weekend down in san fran. I stopped in at an art reception for burning man pieces and tried to spread the MegaPixels word. Hopefully we'll get some good interest from that avenue.
I'm signing up for the list on yahoo groups. I think we are getting to the point where we need an email list.

March Update
This is going to be one of those bad news/good news updates.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bad news is that the project did not get an art grant from the ORG.
The good news is that I'm still interested in trying to make this happen, and so are a number of other people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bad news is that I'm feeling down right now, and I didn't expect to feel down. I knew this was a possibility and I thought I was emotionally prepared for it, but I wasn't.
The good news is that there are a lot of you out there and I have a lot of friends and I just know that by this time tomorrow I'll have heard positive comments and my spirits will be lifted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, starting tomorrow we begin figuring out how to make this the biggest non-funded artwork ever brought to the playa. I'll be counting on you to tell everyone you know. We need everyone who can to sign up for at least 5 pixels. If everyone brings at least 5 we only need 2000 people to contribute. If everyone signs up for 10 then we need 1000 people. Simple math.
Thanks for your support. We have about 170 days before we start doing things on the playa.

Re: March Update
Sputnik, I just mass emailed my campmates. If I can get them to check out the website I'm pretty sure they'll consider it. Just so you know, I'm behind you and this project 100% and I will do all I can to help make it happen. BRING IT ON!
Sputnik,
I'm sure that hearing from BMORG was a blow, but this project is going to happen. You've got some good people around you and a great idea. I'm with you.
I think it's important to start talking about the technical plans for getting things laid out on the ground. As we get closer to the event more and more people are going to be interested in taking part in the project. They'll want to know how this is going to get pulled off. The more information they have, the more interested they'll be.
So I'd like to start talking tech. What are the current ideas for getting the fabric laid out on the playa? That's the key to this whole thing and everything else is going to fall into place.

Re: BRING IT ON!
Well, my plans to date have varied. Initially I thought that each pixel would get stapled (using fabric staples) to a grid of baler twine. There have been a variety of other ideas since then. I'm open to discuss pretty much anything. I think in order to keep things in the right place I'll create a new topic to discuss just this part of the project.airborne wrote:Sputnik,

My original thought was to attach them to the cable by using commercial grade fabric staples. Just fold over the line and staple. See the above response for a link to the new forum.Bin Noddin wrote:And specs for the pixels themselves - do you want a sleeve to slide a cable through along one or more sides? grommets in the corners or sides? etc.

This weekend I sent out an email to everyone who registered for the project and asked them to reply to confirm their participation. As of today the confirmed pixel count is 675. We had one guy who signed up for 100 pixels drop out. That hurt.
So, if you've thought about signing up, now is the time.

I agree. I think selection of an image will help sell the idea...especially if we come up with a good one that makes people chuckle or smile.Almost wrote:I think selection of an image would definetly help encourage people to sign up, if they know what their making they'll probably be more willing to commit.

Ours should be bigger!Maxim magazine celebrated its 100th issue by building a 75-by-110-foot billboard featuring its cover image of Eva Longoria, billed as "TV's Sexiest Earthling." The billboard doesn't tower over a highway, however. It's flat on the ground so that it can be seen from a satellite and posted on Google Earth.

Make it cubes with a different side to be pointed up each day for 6 days. Put whatever you want on the first five, but the sixth one needs to say Burma Shave!I agree. I think selection of an image will help sell the idea...especially if we come up with a good one that makes people chuckle or smile.

Something fishy about that photo looks like it was taken from aircraft combined with photoshop and perspective is wrong for sat shotregionalchaos wrote:Maxim must have heard about our idea!

LAS VEGAS Apr 6, 2006 (AP)— For air travelers flying over southern Nevada this week, the view offers more than miles of dusty desert. A giant, bikini-clad Hollywood star perched on the desert sands isn't a mirage, but a recreation of a Maxim magazine cover.
The cover is made of a vinyl-mesh screen and reads, "THE ONLY MAGAZINE BIG ENOUGH TO BE SEEN FROM SPACE AND ONLY IN VEGAS!" A barely dressed Eva Longoria, star of ABC's "Desperate Housewives," graces the 75-by-110-foot display just outside Primm, near the California state line.
The cover is part of several days of events celebrating the magazine's 100-issue milestone, including poker and golf tournaments at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino, a Maxim public relations representative said this week.
Erika Yowell, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, told the Las Vegas Sun that her agency is involved with the promotion because the magazine's readers are a good target audience for the city.
Maxim is one of the new "lad's magazines" that feature scantily clad, but not nude, young female celebrities.
