Master FIGJAM, has it slipped your mind that I work in a machine shop, and that I live not very far from you?![]()
(I'll call you tomorrow with the tracking number for the couplers.)
I'd love to help get TinyMystic's ChairyYacht on the Playa! If she can do the terrain at SaguaroMan, with the soft sand pocked with thick clumps of grass, the Playa will be a joy! (I was truly impressed by her spirit!)
Oh, and I must say, I'd have posted a few SaguaroMan pics, but you seem to have covered that with much better shots of the same things!! Thanks for that!!!!
Please lead me by the hand, since I am way behind on sleep...

how are you locking the front drive wheels together, so one does not take all the torque and spin without the other two?

The front caster wheels can all "roll" independent of each other on thier own bearings and each set of 3 pivots on the upper shaft.
The back drive wheels are 3 wheels bolted together to just make a wider tire.
The idea was to distribute the wieght over move surface area to prevent plowing, sinking, and getting stuck.
I'm putting batteries in tommorow to test.
Test conditions will be 4" sand, 4"pea gravel, 2"s of 1/2" rock, and some very rocky ground.
We shall see!

Re: Work in Progress 2013
One issue that may pop up and just playing devils advocate is that when tires are in contact with each other they rub at the bottom as they compress and decompress from loading up there is movement there. This will eat out the sidewalls and blow inflated tires or eat grooves into solid tires, good thing with the solid tires is that it will only eat so far until enough clearance has been created. This thing looks ready to roll through anything though - looks like a solid build.

The ChairyYatch did really well for a first test!
It went through the sand, pea gravel, and 1/2" rock without to much trouble, and the one time it got stuck, backing up pulled it right out.
The pea gravel hill is steep and about a foot high, and the chair did pretty good till I tipped over backwards. (crash dummies day off)
Gotta find something harder than allthread for the caster axels, but I would call it a success!

The casters are only on the front.
Ideally the caster axels will be 5/16"x9" grade 8 with 1 1/2"s of thread on each end.
Waiting to hear back from Triken.

oops. *critical reading class*
haha
so, do I see that the center tires are shorter than the outside?
that should keep the outers from sinking too far in soft conditions, good idea.

Re: Work in Progress 2013
Made some decent progress today. For a start, the water containers Pani and I ordered arrived today. These will serve us well for both the playa as well as assorted campouts and of course the coming apocalypse. Here's a quick clip I put together to show a couple campmates who wanted to know more about the things, they're looking for something that will serve them for both on and off the playa.
I also got a fair bit of design work done today. In re-designing some of the ziggurat supports, I needed to rework a few existing parts as well as design a few new ones. While the structure has the outward appearance of being something really simple, doing this as a slotted wood design is really a big ball of giant, crazy math. I finally turned the corner and got the new and revised pieces sorted (though I'm already thinking about other design revisions to make before the final commit), and then I moved on to the next phase of design for the project: the new railings for the shade structure up top:

To be honest I'm not yet quite sure how much I like that. It's just a first draft, and based on a piece of art that was created for another project. But it's a start, and gets rid of the last big 'FPO' block I had in my model.

Re: Work in Progress 2013
I was up early and got a head start on the railing panel designs. It's one of those things that may not have seemed like much, but took a whole lot of reworking to get it right. As I'd brought them in for the 'first draft' the design was skinnier than the panels, and spacing in some of the pieces just wasn't ideal from a structural integrity standpoint. I'd be able to cut them, but they'd be weak and potentially breakable (which I'd like to avoid). Simply stretching things out wouldn't work, it would end up making the Eridu Society logo look bad. But I really love the piece, and wanted to incorporate that design somehow. So I basically had to make it all over again. That let me get something that fit the size and shape of the panel, as well as be wide enough in all the right spots and all that nonsense. It took a number of revisions, but finally I think I got it with v5…

Here's a closeup shot of the panel…

And then I went ahead and rendered another wide shot of the camp for the FB page cover photo.

Hooray, no more of my plastic blue FPO pieces! All the structural elements have now been more or less designed, though I may need to rework some plans for the wall units, my campmate who's curating the art going into those wall unit displays on either side of the ziggurat tells me he's working on a piece that may end up proving to be 10-15 feet wide. That'll be a fun challenge...

not on the scale of some of these projects, but a new front for Espresso Camp. Out with the old PBR (painted over), in with the new Buzz Bomb Nuclear Grade Espresso. A bit more lettering and details to put on.

fortunately, there have been enough distractions going on around here that it was relatively easy.
Rode my trike to work the last 2 days, and tonight, after work, PlayaPoppa and I took it to a co-worker's party. (oh, yeah.... FUN!!)
I've really missed riding lately, with tranny trouble and such. All fixed now.......
