Shipped box #1 to the "whale's vagina" today. Only 73lbs.
Box 2 will probably go out in another 10 days.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Went thru the list of items I thought I needed 3 months ago and added/subtracted, organized, decided where and when I was going to buy what, and actually went walmarting for some of the stuff.
Got a line on a utility trailer I might be able to borrow for the road trip, which will take a LOT of stress off trying to pack everything into my SUV. (Go figure, one person going on his first burn can't fit all his shit in a full size SUV).
Fixed the LCD in my iPhone so it will be usable to download the various burner apps for this year.

Replaced the EZ up which got snatched by the wind at E-11 and bent to shit. We have used it at B-Man for years, no problem, with camo netting, not the canopy. Get to Seabase and Larry tried to set up with out a second helping hand (me, I make a terrific anchor). Wind snatched up the two legs not pinned down yet and flipped it assbackwards over the trailer it was attached to. Kinda turned it inside out on its head. Not so good for the joints.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I'm starting to panic. The living room is full of boxes with stuff I ordered for a bigger shade structure, a swamp cooler, and ... um, something else, I think. It's chaos. We'll be "hosting" a burgin this year, picking her up at the airport. That means I have to put the seat back in the van. That means there probably won't be room for all our stuff. That means I have to buy a roof rack, and we're already over budget. Anyone have any good ideas for a cheap roof rack for a 1970's era Chevy Van?
My one item for today - try not to panic.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Roof Rack:
I just found one a couple of weeks ago~
had been pricing them all over, and they were all WAY over my (non-existent) budget.
This was at W*Mart for $54.98 and it would work even better on a van than on my little tiny Nissan Versa Hatchback.
Reese (Carry Power) Rooftop Basket Carrier.
Not huge, but looks like it could hold alot if the stuff was properly secured.
I had trouble with the brackets and modified them.
I also have an amazing assortment of neoprene and silicone sheet scraps...
made better padding with neoprene. (Silicone is too slippery)
We will have 4 in the Versa, plus some of the gear. Fortunately, we're all skinny!
The rest of the gear (+ bikes) will be sharing space on a LITTLE trailer already holding ALOT of stuff, hauled by another of our party (2 people in the jeep and the back loaded to the hilt.)
Needless to say, it will be a challenge!

Find a metal twin bed frame, weld some flat plate on for feet, and bolt the feet to the top of the van.

That is actually the only reason I bought a used iPhone but honestly the phone is kinda of a pain since I have to jailbreak it to use it on a different network. Are the apps really worth the trouble?melodiousdirge wrote:Fixed the LCD in my iPhone so it will be usable to download the various burner apps for this year.
(I could potentially get an Android phone instead but haven't seen many well reviewed BM apps for them)

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Set out to make some of the seams on the dome canopy today:

Was somewhat surprised by a "Why the f*** is it so warm in here" moment.

(I was using the shop at a natural gas plant - they were having some issues and blew a bunch of gas out to the burn pit)
And I ran out of glue at about this point:

The canopy is about 1/4 done, so I really hope I can find a cheaper source of glue. I used 1 pint for this much and it's nearly $30 a pint.

Figjam - funny you should mention that. Just today I saw an old bedframe in the back parking lot of a local thrift store, and I thought it might make a good roof rack.
Triken - thanks for the tip. Sounds like you've got quite the setup for travelling!

Hey Melodious - nice garage! Is that an engine valve you're using as a paper-weight in your first pic? That must have come out of one huge engine!

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Thanks! but that's not my garage - I wish it was! It's the workshop at one of the compressor stations I work for (I work for a natural gas pipeline company). That is an engine valve from one of the NG engines that drive the big compressors pushing gas down the pipeline - and yes, they are fairly large! I think that one is from a 2000hp unit about the size of a medium schoolbus. The Bee wrote:Hey Melodious - nice garage! Is that an engine valve you're using as a paper-weight in your first pic? Pulled out, washed and patched the first yurt. Took most of yesterday. Starting the second room today. Hopefully we'll have them both wrapped up in their new tarps and ready to load on the truck by tonight. They've never been ready to go this early before!

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Picked up a bike rack for my trailer hitch - got home only to discover it was a repack that had been scavenged for all the straps and hardware.
I was annoyed at having to drive back to the store with it, but they didn't have another one in stock and upgraded it to a better model at no charge so it actually worked out even better.

It's nice to hear when stores "do the right thing" like that. Which store was it?
On my end I tested out the new air mattress (just BARELY fits in the tent) and starting working up our shopping list for Reno. Very happy we rented an SUV out there as we just aquired another (6'9"!) burner who will be coming with us. Thank goodness the folks arriving earlier are bringing our water for us, otherwise I'd be getting really concerned about space!

It was Eastern Mountain Sports who coincidentally also had a price on thule bike racks that was lower than everyplace else by 30.00 to 50.00waxpraxis wrote:It's nice to hear when stores "do the right thing" like that. Which store was it?
I figured they gave me a 10.00 upgrade or something but when I looked on line the thing lists for 70.00 more than I paid for the original one.
