1988 Pepcon Explosion
Henderson, Nevada

I saw this happen. I was a graduate student at UNLV.

After the 1st explosion (which made the office ceiling bow in like the head on a kettle drum), we all ran outside, thinking that a plane had crashed (Our offices were across the street from the far end of the Las Vegas airport runway).

Looking over toward Henderson, we saw the smoke plume and ran over to the crest of a hill to check it out. Some big plant was on fire! We later found out that it was Pepcon, they made the solid fuel used in the Space Shuttle booster rockets.

Suddenly, we saw a GIGANTIC fireball erupt over the plant - from the second explosion. "Careful! Here comes the shockwave!" Then "BOOM!" - it nearly knocked us off our feet.

It was pretty fucking impressive. People's windows were blown out for something like a 5-mile radius

Only one person was killed. The plant owner/manager, who was in a wheelchair, had voluntarily stayed behind to make sure that everyone got out.
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...
