Yes I agree. I was quite worried as my daggone corporate clamp-down would not let me buy my tickets at work, and I was AT WORK until 8 PM. Got home around 6 PST and was sure there'd either be a huge jam or no more tickets. But I got right in and bought my tix, got immediate confirmation... okay now I can have a drink.

Still have a couple of weeks to see how my ticket acquisition will go. got to get me a belly star I guess. solo bad ass can't claim affiliation so perhaps I need to rethink that approach.

Directed Group Sale: 10,000 tickets
We are once again taking steps to ensure critical theme camp, art installation, and mutant vehicle crews gain access to tickets. In addition to supporting the core social infrastructure of Black Rock City, providing these groups with access to tickets early on will decrease demand (and therefore competition) for tickets in the main Individual Sale. 10,000 tickets at $380 each will be offered to these core crews on Wednesday, January 30. Group leaders will receive an email on Friday, January 11, 2013 with detailed information about how to provide their core group members with access to the Directed Group Sale.

i could use something like that tonight! its -26F (-32C) and after windchill it feels like -47F (-44C). I seem to have a nice brisk breeze blowing on me again... oh well, it will be 23F on Saturday

We went from -30 last week to +53 yesterday. Nuts.
Going back to below freezing in two days, predicted to zero.
This usually results in a lot of birds dieing. It's only in the last two years that their numbers were starting to approach what they were before the ice storm back in '98.

There were birds dying out on the ice at the Bear River Bird Refuge, December was warm, but we'd had a drought, so the waterfowl were underfed and many didn't keep going south. Then January hit with bad air and the temps stayed below freezing for nearly the entire month. Nothing could be done to save the ducks and cranes and other water birds.

I got the door latches made on the ovens last night. Made 'em sort of "steam punk, Jules Vern, industrial".
I'll do the final welding, and it'll be time for testing.

A combination of factors. Underfed, overly cold, yucky air, any one condition is survivable, but all together? Bad news.

I know there are sandhills at Bear River, but they aren't a usual species there. Here's the bird brochure:

I checked the news story, they talked about herons at Farmington Bay, but that's close enough to the big bird refuge that you get the same birds, same conditions. The bay is fed by Bear River.

We have birds that stay here all winter. It frequently gets below -40. There is a river running through the center of my city and I guess the water treatment plant releases some water into the river all the time. The river does not freeze solid, but certainly has ice on it. I have noticed that a couple of flocks hang out on the ice right beside the open water... I am not sure if it is a full-time thing, or if they go somewhere else at night time.
