What we are all about

Post by Killbuck » Sun Jul 03, 2005 12:53 pm

Comrades! and the General Public of BRC 2005

As the days tick by, we draw closer and closer to our arrival on the playa, our meeting face to face, and our combined efforts and enthusiasm towards APOKILIPTIKA. Therefore, it is time to focus and refine the theme and the social order in which our little society will function. For those of you not within our camp, you have two choices from here.

1. Say, I don't care, and go to the thread about stamp collectors forming a camp.

2. Say to yourself- "gee I've heard:
a. good,
b. bad,
c. (fill in the blank______________) things about this camp and will read on.

Ok, that's done. Back to the camp members. I hope that everyone has read the How to Get Along section of the website- as this is a great set of guidelines for our 9 to 10 days of community.

http://www.geocities.com/rx_norman

There are two things that make Burning Man what it is- Art and Community.

Let's start with the community part. This camp, in order to function well, and indeed thrive, is based on mutual respect- which is the basis of all community. Now, this can be tough with powerful personalities, creative minds and basically looney individuals... but it does work, over and over.

To the end of managing expectations- I'd like to get to a point recently expressed- and good that it has... as I'd like to dispel any misconceptions right away... not leave anyone wondering.

There has been skuttle that APOKILIPTIKA is a sexually oriented or even... GAD!... a "sex camp." Oh really now... have a seat- I'll talk this one out with you. No, there will be no sex camp here... no nookie tents, no public sex, no sexual aggression, no sexual intimidation, coercion, humiliation, etc., etc, etc. Will there be sexual language, expression or overtones? Will people have fun with sexual suggestiveness? Sure, you bet. But that's mostly fun, fluff, decoration and good natured hyperbole. Remember, sexuality is a paert of the conscious and sub conscious mind-- and that sexual expression is a big part of BM and art in general. One can have great sexual expression in painting, sculpture, music, poetry and performance and that is not a sexual act is it? Ah, but it is expression.

Everyone- and I mean everyone- will feel at home and comfortable in this camp- a camp of good friends many of you have not met yet. Mutual respect will be No. 1. Anyone who actually violates that will be fed immediately to the playa crocs. I said so, so there.

We are about community-- in making creative connections, and collaborating with one another on ideas. That's why we have maintained a very tight control on membership... and will continue to do so. The art is what I'm always in this for... and always will be in this for. The theme of end of the world tribal mercenary- neo-sovietski fascist chic is our unifying visual and artistic theme. It's a very fun world to play with, and can provide a real personality to our camp and its members.

The collaboration and connection in creativity shown by the members is frankly awesome- especially since most of you only know each other by shared electons on a screen. This is the new community- the one that says we will not and cannot look back to a mythic good old days... but rather one that is built to make us survive the world the future will impose upon us. "March or die."

For many of you, this will be your first burn. As the omnipotent leader, this gives me a great responsibility. I remember my first as the most memorable- and want all of you to have the best damn first burn possible. I'll do whatever is needed to make that so. For those of us who are returning burners- we all know that each burn is a unique experience- the uniqueness a creation of ourselves.

It is my hope that APOKILIPTIKA will always be a place of art and community first, and will be a great way for creative people to meet, collaborate, contribute and make a positive, memorable- even (dare I say it...) enviable experience, with others saying... "why can't OUR theme camp be that cool?"

That's that we are all about.

Heli- I can always count on you to hold the southern front!!
Expect your patches soon, and a few extras in the post fairly soon.

Regarding your PM you sent- remember the immortal words of
Zaphod Beeblebrox (my hero) who blurted:

"This is GREAT!! We really must be onto something if they're trying to kill us!!"

I can't recall a theme camp that I've looked more forward to seeing on the playa than Apokiliptika. It's made my list of things I have to check out.

First you must get past the 300 pound, 6'6" Mad-Max-Style guard....barbwire, sandbags and bad attitudes...then, maybe, you get something nice. PBR or something really special.....

At 6'5, 280 lbs, with knowledge of Tae Kwon Do (but I'm still not in tip top shape so that equalizes things)...coupled with a really nasty attitude when I need it, a damn good set of bolt cutters and access to a portable plasma cutter and a battering ram, I'll take your challenge. Make sure that PBR is cold!

I might be able to arrange air support too. It's like come prepared or don't come at all.

In all seriousness I can't recall seeing a theme camp in the past couple of years with this kind of preparation going in. The website, the posters, the characters....it's really impressive. And no I'm not groveling to stay there, I have my own place. But when something's really good you have to recognize it. Anyway I'm back to playing with Google Earth...it's a great tool for planning world domination if the Kernul hasn't already started using it!

i never said anything about using my assets to your detriment, just to get myself in, and besides, i've already talked with the kernul about doing some undercover agent work for the cause, so there.
