Re: DAMMIT BILL !!!
DAMMIT BILL !!!... Seriously, WTF. I am still waiting for a call from an adjuster to tell me my car is totaled. It's 14 years old...has been paid off forever, and not worth much to anyone but me.
So on the bright side, (yes Yggy, I agree that at least I wasn't out in the storm like small animals - and for that I am grateful...it really could have been a lot worse) I thought I would use the piddly amount of cash I get for it to pay for gas to TTITD - I have my burner van, it's not great for around town, but it has a windshield...
So here comes the WTF part...
I noticed last week that oops, my inspection on the van expired in May. I made it through the weekend w/o a ticket - took it in this morning and it was discovered that my hub bearings? and rocker arms? have slack, or are bad and need to be fixed.
Turns out that the motherfucker at the lot where I bought it a year ago used an old "fill it up with grease to make it look snug" trick and it got past my mechanic that looked it over for me. The 1000 miles I put on it in the past 12 months loosend it up to reveal the truth. It's going to cost 1k. So I guess I will use whatever I get for my car to pay for repairs on the van...and back to square one for gas money. dammitdammitdammitdammit!
I am trying to decide if it's worth paying a visit to the fucker at the car lot. I know I can't get anything out of him, but for fucks sake, I had my grandson in that van this weekend. We were on I20 for an hour and a half at 70mph. I at least need the satisfaction of telling him I know what he did...and ask him what else he disguised...and ask him if he would put his family at risk like that.
As my friend Elorrum so eloquently put it...it's the icing on the shit cupcake.
Sorry for the rant...I am just a little worked up about this. It will work out...it always does, but GAH!!!

Re: DAMMIT BILL !!!
hub bearings..........well, I'd assume he meant wheel bearings, and rocker arms, are totally unrelated. Rocker arms transfer motion from the cam shaft to the valves in the engine in a non overhead cam engine.sadie wrote:DAMMIT BILL !!!... Seriously, WTF. "hub" bearings, unless there is a ton of damage, should not cost 1K.
Neither, should rocker arms, unless it's more than that.
I don't see how "fill it up with grease" would work on rocker arms, in any sense.
seems difficult to see on hub bearing as working, too. Though, they could be tightened enough to seem ok, it would not be a grease thing. And if really bad, should have made a lot of noise, fairly soon. An inspection would not necessarily show bad bearings if tightened enough, especially if done soon after said adjustment.
but, if a "state" inspection, it'd seem unlikely the bearings would be part of the check......usually it's smog related.
Of course, I'm sure some states require more things than others............something seems amiss there, or not as it seems.

Yikes Sadie!!
I'm really sorry to hear about all the trouble! People putting your family in danger really sucks!
Things will work out, because you are a good person, and I look forward to meeting you somewhere at the burn.
I hope this week treats you a lot better!

AntiM...don't pick at it!! You'll get that thing that babies get...infant-tigo...
Yggy.. I am sure I got the terminology wrong. I know he said wheel hubs, and it must have been some other "arm". I understood him to mean the issue is with the wheels/steering, and the parts that keep everything where it should be. The cost also includes an allignment and an oil change. It was a state inspection, but I also asked them to check it out for my upcoming 3000 mile road trip. I have used this garage for 8 years, and have no reason not to trust them. They are a little pricier than other places, but are honest and have taken good care of me. They know how tight my finances are and would not gouge me to stay afloat...they have tons of business - one of the few places in town with a good reputation.
That being said, I don't know how they could have missed this a year ago. They gave me the green light to make the purchase. There was some scheduled maintenance due at the time that I would think would have exposed this problem.
I guess getting this news within a week of losing my other car to death-by-hail is what made my head explode.

Dammit Bill!!!
My 3/4 ton 4x4 was a county vehicle before I bought it so I thought it had SOME regular maintenance, but I hadn't done the brakes.
The truck has 130,000 miles on it.
No symptom's, but I don't wait for things to brake.
Was going to have them do the rear brakes as the axels have to be pulled to get the drums off and then I would do the front brakes myself.
I insisted on watching the teardown to make sure they didn't try to pull a fast one.
They pull the rear drums and parts start raining out, adjusters, springs, seal parts, retainer springs, everything but the bearings.
So I have them inspect the front and the rotors have been turned WAY under legal limit, blown seals and on and on.
I figured on spending $200 to get the rear brakes taken care of, but in my opinion everything that could be wrong with my brakes at the wheels was busted expect for the bearings.
The guy doing the work is a retired aircraft mechanic that has his own check list over and above what company policy requires.
$1300 and it will be ready Monday.
I did a one hour job this morning that got me $800 cash, so it's not as bad as it could be, but...................DAMMIT BILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: DAMMIT BILL !!!
Sadie, If that 1k price includes replacement of the control arms, wheel bearings, the alignment, oil change, and the initial checkup, it's not so bad.
I understand using the mechanic that cost a little more but is honest and does a good job. I have a pricey mechanic I use when it's a job i can't do myself like alignments and stuff. He gets the job done right and fast. He also just happens to be 1/2 a block down from my work.
Dammit me! Where the fuq are my giant channel locks????

Re: DAMMIT BILL !!!
Car trouble sucks. Car trouble stemming from dishonesty gives me a special flavour of angry in my gut.
I bought a jeep last year that started having major problems a couple of months after I'd bought it - just about the time I no longer had legal recourse here in non-litigious Canukistan. Turned out the original rash of ick was the result of the flex plate having been replaced with a variety of badly selected bolts, not properly tightened (at least one inserted at a ridiculous angle). This, of course cracked the plate, causing a couple of other things to go awry.
Since, the exhaust system and the radiator pooped and we're pretty sure it has a cracked manifold (which presented itself as soon as the weather got cooler -- about a month and a half after the purchase).
The woman who sold it to me basically used the line "buyer beware" - delivered with a smile - when I told her about it, knowing her ass was covered.
Dammit Bill! Pass the Tums.

Faulty wiring. The new fire was not in the same place after all, just an anxious person relaying faulty info. Still, the first fire was bad enough, and we are all suspicious of the other buildings in the complex. They lost almost everything, although she may be able to salvage her dishes and pans, things which would survive the smoke and water.

I got home from the Hof, tired and beat, only to realize I left my ice chest, with good amounts of meat and cheese and salami, sitting in the Hof.......I have to go back to get it, so it does not spoil and smell super bad inside, let alone probably set up a really good "bear proofing" test.

Second hand store, Anti-M. Unless yours is the very big or little one, you're likely to find an average of 2 per store. (at least we do here)
Keep the better of the two exteriors and find something sexy to do with the one not chosen.
Maybe this could even be a "Dammit Bill - now why didn't I think of a plushy foot warmer a long time ago" occasion.
