Yeah, R.I.P. Evel.
And thank you.....
When I heard the news yesterday, a huge weight sunk through my chest.
I've never felt this type of "dread" before, not even when family members have died.
This is different. This is the death of a hero.
I grew up in Butte.
With myself being born in 68', Evel had a huge influence
on my childhood. The hype was everywhere in Butte
during the early 70's. I had the wind-up Stunt bike set, the lunch
boxes, tee-shirts, and probaly every other toy that was him.
I also had the Evel BMX bike and every time I jumped it
I WAS Evel Knievel. I wore his costume for 3 halloweens
in a row. He was like Superman to me, only he was real.
His legacy will live on through every Hollywood stuntman and
adrenalin junkies worldwide.
Evel Knievel lived the American Dream
Thanks Evel, you were a hero to me.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Knievel in Las Vegas Nevada in/around 1992; we where both killing time in the lounge of the Casino. Very cool guy.oneeyeddick wrote:This is the death of a hero.

Climbing Denali is more of an accomplishment IMHO than any Snake River Canyon jump could ever be. I don't understand why people like to celebrate failure and give people celebrity status that don't really deserve it. Good riddance.

When Evel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in 74', he was
already at or beyond the pinnacle of his career. The stunt was dangerous
enough thet he had his tombstone made beforehand, only to have the
rocket powered motorcycle's chute ejaculate prematurely, and then
the controversey that ensued ensured his career's demise. Not to mention
the next jump he attempted was crash also, but that was his draw.
That is what his career as a daredevil was about, Sensationalism.
What made him popular was that the audience was watching a
stuntman doing unheard of things that could easily end his life if
they were to go wrong, possibly in horrific fashion.
If David Blaine was to climb Denali naked on his hands upside down, then
that would be comperable to Evel's style. People would
watch, on pins and needles, waiting for him to fuck up.
Comparing a career mountain climbers carefully planned hike up a hill to
Evel's career as a Daredevil is kinda like comparing
Sir Edmond Hillary to Elvis Presley.

Wow. Now that I think of it, I should have sold tickets to people who wanted to watch me get on that train in Austria.

Sorry, it was an Elvis jumpsuit. Well, it's still 70s and with some careful work from the special effects department, it might fly.

Guess what other Bitch Slapper die recently:
Brian Sean Griffith, 40, Plotter in Attack on Skater, Is Dead
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: December 19, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Brian Sean Griffith, who as a bodyguard for the figure skater Tonya Harding admitted that he had a role in the attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan during Olympics tryouts, died last Wednesday. He was 40 and lived in Beaverton.
Griffith died of what his doctor reported as natural causes, according to the Washington County medical examiner’s office. The specific cause had not yet been determined, the office said.
Formerly Shawn Eckardt, Griffith had changed his name since the attack.
Griffith was Harding’s bodyguard when she competed for a spot on the United States Olympic figure skating team in 1994.
That January, an assailant clubbed Kerrigan in the knee, forcing her out of the competition. The International Committee of the United States Figure Skating Association granted Kerrigan a spot anyway, and she recovered in time to win a silver medal at the Olympics, in Lillehammer, Norway.
Days after the attack, Griffith confessed, detailing a plan that he and Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, had hatched. Griffith was sentenced to 18 months in prison for racketeering but was released four months early, in September 1995. The investigation also led to the convictions of Shane Stant, the actual attacker, and Stant’s uncle, Derrick Smith, who drove the getaway car.
Griffith started a computer business in 2001, but state records show it was dissolved in 2005. He was also sentenced to three years’ probation for misdemeanor assault in 2001.
Harding has always said she did not know of the plan. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder an investigation and was barred from United States Figure Skating Association competitions.
