this is completely untrue, but i sure do wish you were correct. the last thing i want to see on the playa is a posted "lineup" at some camp, or worse yet, flyer promotion for the big name DJs. it certainly is difficult to adhere to the whole 'burning man is not a rave' argument in the face of such advertising. still, it absolutely does happen out there.Xhile wrote:Famous DJs or other performers don't advertise themselves at BM
and for the record, i have heard of the datsuns. you may or may not be pleased to know that they came up in a discussion about wolfmother though...
at any rate, burning man celebrities > default world celebrities
edit: i really must learn to spell...

Black Parade?
I was just watching a Black Parade viddy of Famous Last Words and it seems to clearly represent the playa.
A lot of dust and fire and long shots of the ground in front of the drum set, which appears to be playa.
If this isn't at least playa influenced somehow, it's a huge creative coincidence.
Along with Queen, I detect some influence by Mott the Hoople in their music.
I always liked those guys.
The girl I was with gave Ian a ring once and he always wore it on tour afterwards.
As to famous bands at burning man, I met Larry Harvey last year.
He didn't say who he was, but he asked me if I was having a good time.
He said he worked with burning man.
I believe he's famous for playing the electric violin on Howard Beach.

Nobody's famous on the playa, we're all the big stars...
So, Xhlie, any particular reason you're wondering about this?
I'm just trying not to be liveMOOP...

Re: Famous bands that have played at BM?
Sticking to the original question im this post.
The answer is NO. No artist of any integrity has played at BM. This is how u should judge entertainment or enlightenment. If your favorite band plays, then that is the seal of approval. This is the SOLE reason that keeps me away for BM. Just 1 of my favorite bands. Or favorite artist. Why?? Its not money. Its the fallacy of it all. Prove me wrong please. Then ill go!!

Wrong.
Joan Baez, simple Temple set.
Alan Parsons; I, robot, full album.
Many, many fine Bluegrass musicians (thanks, Rootpile)
So many others, but you get the idea.

Mutaytor with its regular musicians such as bassist John Avila (formerly of Oingo Boingo), ex-Supertramp drummer Steve Reid, Steve Perkins from Jane's Addiction….gaminwench wrote: ↑Sat Nov 13, 2021 2:54 pmWrong.

Smooches gaminwench
Yes I thoroughly enjoyed them in the Circus tent in 2008. Seems like there was another band the played before their set. Really enjoyed them also just can’t remember the name of the band.
John Avila came down after his set and hung out at the fire pit with us at burners Without Borders until sunrise.
Most don’t go to the burn looking for music… but there’s sure plenty if you look. At least that’s been my experience. Can’t speak for anyone else.

The answers on page 1 of this thread are the best illustration of the Burning Man philosophy.
The Burning Man philosophy is open source and immediacy. It is not counting on your past fame in the default world to draw audience at the Gerlach Regional, or to blast out marketing on your social media about being at Burning Man to promote your future audience in the default world.
In immediacy there is no default world.
What, Where, When is a compromise to immediacy.
The purpose of making art at Burning Man is a challenging vision quest, to survive while making art in a wilderness.
(I'm so old I remember when to find events it was word of mouth, asking at camps, or handwritten schedules somewhere around the stage. It worked and it was always a pleasure to come upon something outstanding with a small group of burners surrounding it. Fortunately we still have "playa time" to fuzz things.)

Re: Famous bands that have played at BM?
Yep times they are a changing.
I’ve never looked at The Who/what/when/where booklet or the map or any of the other info they give you at the gate.
Takes all the Mystery away. I Preferred finding the little gems of performances and art by accident or word of mouth. The reason I knew about Mutaytor is because the circus tent was just down the Esplanade from us at BWB. And …they had a schedule posted on the tent.
Keep in mind that black rock city has hundreds if not thousands of people with very strong ideas of what black rock city is or should be.
Make it your own. Everybody does.
You can’t get away from the fact that sound camps bring a lot of people out to the burn for sound camps and that only. So what.
If that’s your thing go for it.
Also ….please Don’t go to the burn if you think you’re going to meet somebody famous or see a big band performance it’s not Going to happen. That Famous person you’re looking for… Chances are you will walk right past one of them or they will drive past you or one riding next to you in party barge and you will never noticed or see them.
I’ll give you an example.
When John Avila showed up at the edge of the fire pit at BWB. I was The only one that recognized him. Even though there was four other people that were sitting at the fire pit who just watched the same show I did. I told him I recognized him but did not announce who he was to anybody else and then ask him to come sit by the fire with us. We were playing a game with everybody that walked up to the fire pit (Introduce yourself not by your name but by your most memorable burning man experience to that point).
After spending some time working for Bill Graham presents. I knew who he was. Also knew he wasn’t looking to be the center of attention he’s just looking to hang out someplace. Even after the four other people realized who he was he still wasn’t the center of attention. He was just another burner telling stories, laughing and hanging out with a bunch other burners. Dozens and dozens and dozens of people walked up to that fire ….and not one recognized John sitting right next to me the whole time.
With No expectations comes no disappointments.
Winks “Playa Time” what the heck is that? Smiles ~

Yep.
I take the What, Where, When guide, put it in my 'save' box, and *maybe* peruse it back in defaultia. I have several on which I've not cracked the spine.

There's the wanna-bes who came and did a video... Should have been called Shot Down.
Back in the default world, a friend has a cottage on a not small nor large lake, where a well known solo artist of multi-decades also has a cottage. He loves that he can walk around the lake and up to anyone's campfire that looks interesting, and be treated just like any of the other cottagers who decide, sober or otherwise, to go walkabout around the lake. He's older now, so he appears to also appreciate the custom of sharing whatever food (& drink) one has with whoever is on walkabout. Sometimes he plays, or sings, but he doesn't perform. He's just doing sing along as others may decide to do, according to the spirit of the moment. I'm not sure how many even know who he is. Occasionally, someone will say 'you sing that really well!'. Or be startled when they realize who he is, and they look around and either the others don't know or ignore it, and he may or may not give them a quick wink. And then after a pause or two, a few may, or may not, share a tiny followup smile with him. Sometimes people sit around listing to the loons calling as they float out on the lake all night. Sometimes he's gone by morning. Sometimes he's there for breakfast.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.
.
Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.
.
, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

Let me look.
……………
Oh Yes So true.
I think I was next to helitacks camp that year. Good times . Snickers ~
I wasn’t prepared for who I found on those first two pages. At least three … I know of who are not with us anymore. Brought a tear to my eye.
All three are greatly missed by myself and many many others.
Life is to short. Way to short.
Recently I heard somebody say

I just get the booklet, enter the gate and hunt where my soul leads me.
just listened to the tunes of the band and other performances.
then put the booklet on my pocket.
