ygmir wrote:yeah steel.........I've had an interesting relationship with it.
in my work, I use steel tools, some of them well over 100 years old, some hand forged. And, have some equipment, and even scrap steel, the same age.
When I but a new steel "thing", and especially if it's something I hit, pry with, or weld, it's so obvious!!

some of the old steel stone working tools, and hand drills, ring a a super high pitch, each time you hit them, it's almost musical. And, if working on a nice piece of hard, dense stone, that ring adds to it. You can "feel" the tones, and how the enegergy transmits from arm, to hammer, to chisel, to stone......sort of a "zen" thing, I suppose.
But, buy a new chisel, escpecially if it's made "offshore", and it just thuds.......or at best as a bit of a ring, but short lived.
I have stonecutting hammers, again over a century old, that I've never had to grind a mushroom off of........and they've totally worn out many chisels.

and then pry bars.........Jeebus! I've bent 3/4" hex bars, 6' long. New ones, that is. I have old ones, I can jump on, and all they do is give a little then throw me off to the side.

i hear this so well. i dont think i have a single modern tool that feels well made, even the glasscutters i used 20 years ago were actually better, smaller wheels and more rugged.

MyLarry has broken three ratchet bars, a couple bolt cutters, numerous garden trowels, and one Gerber titanium multi-tool. A d that is just what I have paid attention to lately.

He needs new knuckles, but the docs are afraid he will tear artificial joints apart.

of course Savannah, we all know that's what you were thinking, and meant.
no one said different, did they?

unless by "oh come on" your indicating another thought?

I'm right there with you, Yggy, I hate the junky tools... Whether it's a hand tool, power tool, or even computer for that matter. You spend more on the quality stuff up front, but overthe long haul you save a fortune.

I'm still in the middle of a long damned day of working with some pretty good tools. Shopbot session went well, then I finished a little over 200 parts by hand on the table router. Grabbing a bite next door, then heading back over to work on the vinyl cutter.

I like quality, and I do appreciate nice tools. I also see the value of getting cheaper stuff if I only need to use it once, or once a year, or if I'm not sure if it's something I'll like spending a lot of time on. I've learned the value of "good enough" even though I can totally relate to the glint in people's eyes when I describe the features, and benefits of the super stuff. I also feel that the next great thing coming down the pipe does not turn the solid everyobody-loves-this item into a piece of crap. I don't like the brands that sold their good names to Chinese manufacturers and now represent cheap tools. The tools that last, that don't get lost or broken, are good old friends.

^^^ exactly. I have a few of those, that were my Dad's.

Just got off the phone with our friend Moonrise, he's in the hospital for fuck's sake, (Renown, Reno) worried as can be... seems his back was a lot worse than we thought, since, the docs took a look at his last MRI and decided he is in real trouble from a bad infection in there. Geez. Send some good thoughts if you have any. :|

Good thoughts for Moonrise. Thanks for filling us in on his status MDF, and next time you speak with him, please let him know we are thinking of him.

I've had a couple of days off from work, and been doing the 'hunter/gatherer' thing, rummaging through the garage collecting up items for the burn. Also finalizing some art ideas.

We are having a real problem with the Emerald Ash Borer around these parts, an insect that kills ash trees. It so happens that I have a lot of ash trees in back, and many of them are done for. Also a really big ash in the yard not too far from the house, that is in decline. That one will require a tree guy with a truck to bring down properly.. $$$$..

*shakes fist at Emerald Ash Borer*

Egads, sorry to hear Moonrise's back is in such bad shape! Here's hoping for infections to go away and things to ease up for the guy lickety split.
