YIKES!! I wasn't prepared for that number! I've also read a bit about renting a Uhaul both as transport and shelter...do you see a lot of that on the Playa?
Yes, they absolutely do use them as shelter--mostly for sleeping, less so for shade because eventually they do get warm and stuffy inside on a particularly hot day, and the view is narrow. :) However, on a cool day (65F or so--it does happen) you might be able to nap inside. I did once from 1-5pm, despite usually being terrible at napping. Moving trucks, box trucks, etc make excellent bedrooms. Quiet(ish), & you can sleep about an hour later than in a tent.

Some folks extend shade cloth off of the open end of a moving truck using poles of various kinds. In a pinch, you could even sit in the shadow of one, provided you don't mind moving your chair from time to time. I did this during my second burn. It wasn't spartan to me; it was just funny.

If you're camping on the end of a block, avoid pointing a moving truck's large door to the South, because that's the direction the dust storms tend to come from.

Reno's trucks get snapped up fast and demand is large (and prices high) so look at flying into any city that's an acceptable number of hours' drive from Gerlach.

Thanks for the info/advice, Savannah!
I'm not much of a napper, either, and the Uhaul option is sounding pretty appealing at this point--seems to answer many needs...I'll be looking into it further, for sure! This is precisely why I've given myself soooo much time to plan! Though I wish more and more I had started LAST year so that I'd be going THIS year!! :D

When worksofheart said Uhaul I was thinking of them little pull trailers. I forgot about them big ones :)

The Wind was really kicking last year, luckily we had our tents facing the right way or they would have been blown away!

They can be, but we used tarps and tied everything down with rebar. and had the back of the tarps and tents facing the wind... so it went over them. :)

Not at all. :) 1/2 the people there are in tents (that's a wild approximation . . . could be 40%, could be 55% . . . there are more and more RVs though, simply because people like comfort).

Tents can flip or blow away if not hardy enough, or--far more likely--not properly staked. Then again, so can a shade structure, and so can a dome. I read on tribe.net the other day about some poor fools who didn't stake down their dome (size & materials unknown) and it started achieving liftoff during a storm, and half a dozen people were trying to hold it down and yelling into the wind for assistance. So anything-- technically--can blow away, except for a vehicle, but the odds are very good your stuff will stay put if you do your homework.

Nice 10 inch Coleman stakes will do for many tents. Some people prefer rebar for tents. (Rebar is a definite good thing for shade structures.) Avoid placing all your faith in the scrawny little stakes that come with the average $40 dome tent. (Although I used those for my first three burns, pounded quite flat, and lucked out even through a 4 hour windstorm in 2000 (?).

I've camped in a tent all 6 times I've been. Stake it well, zip it up tight when you leave camp, close all bags and suitcases inside it before you go, and have a whisk broom and dust pan if worse comes to worse. :) Folding your bedding over can also be a wise, quick choice. Covering your bedding in a sheet of plastic during the rare rainstorm adds a greater level of protection. I have only had to do that once.

A lot of people swear by the canvas Springbar tents. They are expensive and heavy as hell, but if you don't track in any dust, they keep out the rest of it very well, apparently.

If I were an extremely practiced driver and traveling alone though, I would love a moving truck or box truck as a bedroom.

2nd time FL burner burner here,

My GF and I fly out from Ft. Lauderdale.
we take 2 carry ons and 2 checked suitcases.
what I did last year was mailed all our camping equipment a few days ahead via UPS to the hotel. we picked up our rental SUV from the airport, went food shoppin (did a lil cookin in the hotel room/vaccuum sealed it)

we then slept like 2 hours and woke up and finished shopping for supplies out in reno.... we rented bikes @ Black rock bikes instead of buying them... maybe this year we'l buy??

we did the same thing sunday, and monday we had to chill and head to tahoe after mailing campin equipment back home, returning bikes, and finally getting the car fully detailed at a reno burner friendly car wash
good times!

if you have any questions or tips id loooove to give some advice.. i read constantly on eplaya before heading out there... and it paid off. the trip was amazing and i fell in love w/ the playa.

i cant wait to be back out there

I'm thinking it cranks up in June every year...a few days more or less...I might be off, tho...it's happened before.

Any problems with the rental car? Someone mentioned a HUGE deposit requirement for burners?? As for bikes...kinda thinking I'd like to pick a cheapish one up at Walmart on the way...surely renting would be just as much? I've read sooooo much here already...eplaya is choc ful of great advice and wonderful people!
