I think we can't really tell from a photograph. There are so many ways you could mess with brightness, that we don't have any constant standard t o compare it to.

Hope-a-lope (love that name!): As another denizen of these boards likes to say: "overkill is still kill." If you can find more lights in the same color (matching whites between batches can be tricky, even with the same company) and you've got the time, why not?

One other thing to consider is redundancy. If there's only one string of lights illuminating you, you're counting on that string never breaking. Having a backup or three is always good.

Yes Fishy, this was the best I could do for a photo. I imagine with the playa being darker than my bedroom with the blinds down, that the coat would look even brighter, but I guess there's only one way to find out.

BoyScoutGirl, excellent point - more is more, and yes, the white are all on one string. I have an extra blue set of lights that I'll try to work in as a backup. Thanks!

I would say you're fine. I used the lights on my new coat this year(my mom is modeling):

and they are super bright. Way brighter than EL wire which is standard playawear.

I added the pink so I could stay lit in camp without blinding everyone with the white.

But echoing what everyone else said, pack a backup personal lighting system. El wire inverter broke last year, so my lightweight playa coat was not lit. Got gifted one of these on Saturday, and I think them make a nice fun backup system, (oran awesome gift). I'm getting a few.

Latest production update includes my wonderful top-hat. Made just for me ... several fittings, hours and hours of planning, cutting, gluing, sewing, shaping and now ... the fun really starts: embellishment. I got me one talented lady!

Our scarves are well on their way as well. We hope to have between 200 and 300 of them to gift. We have sewn "Playascarf" labels onto each one. Included on the label is a blog address to where we hope people will upload photo's of themselves, adorned in their scarf, for fellow Playascarf recipients (or anyone else who happens to stumble onto it) to enjoy.

I am ridiculously excited to see all this in person and get the stories behind everything. As an artist and process freak, I love all the gory details of what worked, how you got inspired, what you had to learn in order to get The Perfect Thing.

Calling it a night on playa coat version 2.0. I really enjoyed making the first draft, but it's YELLOW and that is just not my color. I know I won't feel entirely comfortable in it, so I'm making another one from purple velvet instead.

It IS ridiculously soft, and pettable! But yeah, bringing it to gift. I should probably just show up at Big Puffy Yellow and see if anyone there wants it.

My new purple coat is still in pieces. I'm having a beast of a time with focus today, ha!

Not too bad, maybe 5 pounds. It has 40x 18650 lithium cells in it, which weigh about 50 grams each, so thats about 4.4 pounds of batteries. The plastic controller box doesn't weigh very much at all.

Yeah for sure. Nicd would be around 12-15lbs for the same. The Lithium cells are expensive unless you are brave enough to use salvaged laptop cells. I got 100 off ebay for $150. They work just fine but I had to carefully remove the tabs and repair some of the shrink wrap on a number of them before soldering them up into new packs. Not overly complicated but there's always the risk of fire if you're not careful!

Thanks! The readout is voltage right now (10.8-16.4 volts). It's just a rough indication of remaining life - I'll have to print a little label out that cross references remaining life with the readout... I'm too lazy/don't have time to rig the display up to directly read % life. The output will always be 12.0V thanks to a little boost/buck power supply in the control box, so I can power voltage sensitive things with it as well. The intent was to power any and all light up goodness with the belt, but I have yet to finish any of the light up goodness projects! I think the main current draw is going to be about 300 watts worth of RGB LED strips sewn into my coat (which I have not yet started, eek!).

Decided to make some furry boot covers. Bought the pink fur and non-moopy sparkle threaded elastic. Now, to find the appropriate online tutorial or just say fuck it and figure it out

That's pretty clever! Are those flat lithium cells? I stuck a bunch of LEDs in the bottom of some platform boots last year and the abuse from walking around on them broke all the wiring connections by the end of the week (even though they were fully encased in shoe-goop). Hope that stays working for you, and we that both steer clear of the lithium horror stories I hear.

Alright so public service announcement: McCall's 4222 pattern was drawn up on planet amazonia. I knew it LOOKED large, but I kept telling myself it's a woman's pattern, and it's easier to take it in than to start over again, so I made it in XL, and it looks similar in size to the holocaust robe Andre the Giant wears in the Princess Pride.

A lot of the height is the massive hood though, and I added some length to it, but even without those two things, it is a LARGE coat.

I also did a quick test to see what the LED strings are going to look like through the fur - they shine through awesomely. The fur disperses the light just enough to hide the fact that it's individual LEDs, and it's hella bright. I'll be easy to find with 75 feet of this stuff sewn in!
