Theme 2006 and Borg2

Post by Yurtle-the-Turtle » Fri Sep 09, 2005 2:48 pm

First of all I agree in part with a column I read in Piss Clear that the theme should be less of a priority when placing/funding art. I think artists with original ideas deserve at least equal funding/placement if not the highest priority.

But a theme is good, as long as it's not overbearing. There is some great art inspired by themes. Some peoples' creativity just needs an initial spark to get it going, which the theme provides. In general, the more art, the better! (Otherwise we end up with a big braindead rave in the desert.)

And WooFuckyea! for Borg2. They have taken us from art dictatorship to a two-party system! They challenged the system, when Ideally we wouldn't even have a "system" to challenge. They may not have met their goals, but they still have started a revolution. More groups should follow their lead, instead of just complaining, do something about it! Start your own art funding program!

I have not been keeping up with the BORG2 tribe. It was originally designed to be a one-time experiment to demonstrate an alternative method to bmorg. Have they been making noises about keeping the thing around?

Hmm, I dunno... Borg2 IMHO failed miserably - was ChickenJohn(?) spanked publicly, as he promised he would had he lost the (silly) bet?

criticism of borg2

Post by Yurtle-the-Turtle » Sat Sep 10, 2005 9:34 pm

There are some critics of borg2 that make very good points. But remember, their original goal was democracize the art selection and funding process. Think about it, why should one person who is "appointed" by the burningman organization decide to whatever extent the art we get to bring/see/experience. This should have been challenged a long time ago.

The goal to try to raise more art funding than BMorg was dumb. And yes, they failed at that.

The borg2, as I understand, funded Dance Dance Immolation. If you failed to participate in this I weep for your soul and the beauty it will never know.

"It's Rainin' Men" by Geri Halliwell thundered in my ears as I vainly attempted to negotiated the complicated maneuvers demanded by the video game. Beyond being white, I was hampered by an industrial strength flame-retardant suit.

Why?

Because when I screwed up in the game [or more likely, whenever the operators felt like it] I was shot in the face by freakin' flame throwers.

Fuck "The Last Suppper", that's ART!
