In a way Art Basel Miami is the tamer "Burning Man of the art world." That means every gallery is "participating" with its best creative works, all the cool kids are there dressing to impress and network, and there are the theme camp equivalent of parties.
The upper end of the art world is divided by nonprofit shows gathered by professional curators with schooling and a curator resume and the commercial gallery world where the gallery is the curator working to boost the career and prices of their stable, and of course make sales.
The Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Whitney Biennial are examples of nonprofit shows with professional curators.
Art Basel is a commercial art show curated by the gallery owners and everything is for sale.
Of course the galleries want their artists selected for the nonprofit shows and museums to boost their gallery for-profit prices.
It all comes together with the collectors who buy the work. Collectors at that level have their own curators on staff and many collectors build their own museums to show work to the public. There is also a side scam where collectors launder artwork sales taxes by loaning them to museums.
The big breakthrough was the Burning Man Smithsonian Museum show and the hope collectors will someday buy burner art. Art Basel Miami is part of the plan. Honoraria artwork includes a tithe to the BORG on sale or so I have heard.
