Using AI to Rethink Shade Structures at the Playa

One of the biggest challenges I’ve always faced at Burning Man is figuring out how to make my shade structure solid enough to survive the wind, but light enough to actually transport. Every year I see people coming up with clever hacks — PVC frames, rebar setups, tarps angled just right — and I learn something new.

Recently I’ve been experimenting with using AI as part of the planning process, and honestly, it’s been surprisingly helpful. You can throw in your camp size, budget, and materials you have, and the AI suggests different layout options or ways to anchor things more securely. It’s not a substitute for real experience (and it definitely won’t pound rebar for you), but it’s like having an extra brainstorming buddy when you’re stuck.

For example, I asked AI to sketch out variations of a hexayurt versus a carport-style structure, and it gave me ideas I hadn’t thought about before — like adjusting angles to reduce stress in high winds, or placing reflective surfaces more strategically to cut down on heat. I still had to adapt those ideas to what’s practical on the playa, but it saved me hours of trial-and-error.

I’m curious if anyone else has tried mixing tech into their build planning. Do you think AI has a place in helping us prep for the desert, or do you prefer keeping things strictly hands-on and old-school?
