Landroller Rollerblades on the playa?

Post by xianka » Thu Jun 08, 2006 12:14 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for another way besides biking and scooting to get around the playa. I'm considering getiing these Landroller rollerblades, which have much larger wheels and claim to be able to go over many different terrains. see what i'm talking about at: http://www.landroller.com/

My question is: has anyone tried these Landrollers on terrain similar to the playa? How about the playa after it's rained? after a duststorm?

Do you think I could use these successfully to get around the playa?

Any help is appreciated!!

After a good rain even bicycles are nearly impossible to use on the playa until it dries out some. (Even walking is a big challenge) The surface becomes like glue and builds up on the bottoms of your shoes, hence the term "playa platforms". Then BIG ruts can form - particularly at the corners of intersections.

I've seen landrollers on the playa but it looked like it took LOTS of extra energy.

Hmmm... After looking around on their site, it looks like you could use them if you have strong legs. The wheel size helps.

But like Mojo said, rain = bad. The playa dust is on top of everyting else, basicly a clay once it's wet. Think about trying to move through very sticky clay and you see the issue. :) Then again, just don't use them in the rain. Easy. :)

After a duststorm is no big deal. Now during.... ;)

No matter the form of transport, moving at Burning Man on wet playa is only for the foolish or inconsiderate.

I bring Rollerblade Coyotes to the playa every year. But I also bring

1) a magnapoon and full protective gear

2) a bike

If you have the energy of the Energizer Bunny, these'll work. But expect to spend 2-4x as much energy.

(Google Rollerblade Coyote and magnapoon for info.)

Mine is made with a retractable dog leash and a strong (100-150-lb force) permanent magnet. I love skating on the playa.

I just wish I had photos.

You mean one with the neodymium rare earth in its whatzit? Can't resist that.

BTW, xianka, you can see how if you wait long enough, someone will get you a serious answer.

Magnapoon, gotta find me some of that....
