After much trial and error, I reccommend getting a pair of light weight "tenni-boots" (high-top tennis shoe/ boots.) I got an inexpensive brand that break in much more quickly than work boots. I've had mine for a couple burns and they're the bomb. Use low cut sweat socks in them.

Tevas = too flimsy for playa strolling.
Tennis shoes = same thing, my feet killed at the end of the day.
Hiking boots = too heavy. Especially at night (hard to disco in boots. Unless you're a lumberjack.)

Plus, don't forget, there's always a fair amount of climbing up and down things (structures, vehicles, etc.) A good solid boot is nice for these times.
Irony. You're soaking in it.

I usually bring a few different shoes:

one or two pairs of Converse all-stars (which I wear a lot anyway). If you're using these on the playa make sure you have new insoles for each pair- it will save the bottom of your feet.

Broken in tenni-boots are good too, as EB stated.

I usually have an old broken-in pair of Doc Martin's as well, and bring some fancy (but thrift store) dress shoes for a night-time outfit.

Biggest recommendation I can make- don't bring any shoes you haven't broken it!! I did my first year & my feet almost died. Even though I know better now, I bring blister pads & a few pairs of extra insoles, just in case.

Broken in work boot for working...

Broken in comfy sandals for walking around. Wash feet with vinegar, then lotion them up several times a day.

Your mileage will vary, but anything that lets the playa powder in on my feet ends up with wrecking my feet. I suspect it varies genetically, but I've tried sandals, and my feet end up cracked and bleeding from the powder.

I wear over the ankle walking shoes and midcalf hunting-type boots. My feet get sweaty and soak the socks, but they don't crack, bleed, and burn.

My suggestion, bring a selection of broken-in footwear and finds out what works best for you. You'll do everything better next year. :->

I broke in new combat-ish boots for the occasion. ("Underground" brand) They're almost up to my knee... (size 13, some people could use them as shade structure  )
I'll be bringing old tennis shoes as well, maybe Tevas too.

One of the only things the military has done right (imho);

NATO standard desert combat boots, broken in, with good insoles and wicking boot socks.

Also, Tony Lama (just my pref, any good brand will do) cowboy boots. Made for hot weather, them western folk got it right.

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

I bring 2 pairs of broken in skate sneakers, and a pair of flops to lounge around my camp.

And new socks, I use between 2 - 3 pairs a day.
