This will be my fifth Burn...but my first time Burning while pregnant. I'm about four months along. My doctor gave me the OK (he seemed remarkably unconcerned). Still though, I intend to be especially careful about trying to stay cool as possible during the day.
I know some other women out there have done it before and I'm wondering how that worked out for you? Any tips? Any one else going pregnant this year? If so, what's your plan to deal with the heat, dust, etc?
Also, from reading some posts here, I understand there's supposed to be a long thread about pregnancy on the playa from some years back, but I couldn't find it. Any idea where it went?
Thanks.

I imagine that the playa is not a big thing for a baby in a toasty hot tub like environment. Your womb is a perty stable environment.
Obviously your concerned for your babys health; or you would not post here Alcohol would be the biggest threat to your unborn on the playa. your obvioulsy keen to that one. I feel if your not past the morning sickness thing yet though.
Anyways talk at you later -
be safe and drink lots o water -

HI Hurtafly,
Check out the kidsville chat group at

There are tons of families there, many of which have been pregnant on the playa. You can research old posts or ask new questions.
Cheers,

i was 5 mos preggo last year, about where you are...
my experience was:
drinking tons of water and veritably nonstop peeing.
my ankles swelled up like balloons about halfway through the week, not terribly uncomfortable other than my flip flops nearly slicing through the foot bloat; but looked ghastly.
we had an rv, so during the heat of the day i took refuge under airco first few days. after that i was a bit more acclimated and a few goes on the slip n slide (on top of a blow up raft) cooled me off nicely. garden sprayers nice as well.
i was definitely more hormonal and cranky but had a terrific, fabulous burn and highly recomend it.
if you have specific q's feel free to ping me.

Yeah, mdmf007, I do have some concerns for the safety of the baby. Though my doctor knows exactly where I’m going and seems not particularly concerned, I’m not sure he understands how rough the conditions can be. Mostly I worry that the heat is bad for an unborn kid and, I dunno, maybe the alkaline dust. (This is my first time pregnant so I tend to worry about lots of things.)
That said, we’re bringing a camper with an air conditioner, so it seems like I should be able to stay cool enough. And I love Burning Man and would hate to miss it because I’m being paranoid of every little thing that could go wrong.
Skyneedle, I’ll be sure to check out the kidsville chat group. Thanks for the heads up. And thanks for the information, beeswax.

I am not female but we had a camper last year about as far along as you are. She kept to the shade a lot during the day and went out and about at night when it was cooler.
Just a note that women have been having babies in Empire, Gerlach, and other towns in the region since long before there was air conditioning. My point is that I don't think you are going to harm the baby as long as you take it easy in the heat of the day and don't overdo things.

I will also be pregnant on the playa this year, just about 5 months. I too am concerned about the health of the baby as well as my own(!) considering the heat and wind and associated discomfort. Unfortunately, I am tent bound without the luxury of an RV or other artificially cooled unit. I figure I can come up with some inventive ways to stay cool during the day, and check out other suggestions I've heard of or see posted. It is my choice to come pregnant so I want to make sure I am self sufficient and not relying on others to remain comfortable and healthy. I'll also check out the kidsville group, I want to come as informed as possible!
Thanks to those who have provided comments.
Hurtafly, Good luck out there on the playa w/ baby burner in the belly! Glad to hear of others with similar concerns/condition as my own :D
