And that is why I had to ask him in a PM to redo his post. No getting to "think" what the post might or might not mean. No thinking allowed.

Thanks, I pulled her post, She did have another one asking to camp with someone else, that got to stay. Keep an eye out because the "well meaning" burner links are more insidious than the straight commercial spam.

Her links didn't even work.
I can't figure out if it's spam or oddness.

I know, she just got it wrong. That's why they pay me the big bucks to copy and paste and see what the heck is up with the post. Spiritual journeys and books and workshops, all for a fee. Buh-bye.

So that's about it. Oh yeah. Except the part about paying me the big bucks....

Weird requests to join my camp seem like undercover cops

Post by madmatt » Mon Jul 26, 2010 6:41 am

Anyone else out there dealing with this?? We have a medium sized camp (65-80 people) and I have a lot of posts here and on BM facebook groups discussing stuff like how to avoid underage drinkers, shade structures, all very legitimate stuff, no naughty stuff at all. But our camp definitely has a public presence.

I keep getting private messages, about 6 now, all saying stuff like "hey remember me from last year, how do I secure my spot in the camp. I can be there the day before..."

It's clear I have never met these people. It's clear they are faking that we know each other. Their "profiles" on eplaya show they joined that day and have posted only one message, that day. I have responded to each of them politely "gee, sorry, I can't seem to remember you, can you elaborate?" And they never respond.

I think they are undercover cops fishing for a camp to get in and bust everyone for drugs or whatever other terrible crimes cops thinks Burners do. I'm not paranoid - they are all just so ludicrous and so similar...

We only allow friends of friends join our camp, so no big worry here, just creepy and sad, if it's true.

Anyone else have this happen to them???

Madmatt, would you be willing to post this as a new topic somewhere up in Experiences or theme camps?

I ask because I would like to keep this thread exclusively for spammer reporting and not discussion. With a discussion thread I could easily lose track or the spam reports. I could do it, but then it would show as "my" thread, not yours. And few people read this thread because they see it as spam reports. You'll get more replies in Experiences or Philosophy or Theme Camps.

Thanks.....

Thank you. Dancers in Macau? HA! When I lived in Japan, there were news reports and documentaries about foreign women, some Western, some Asian, who would come to work as hostesses or dancers, then be enslaved, locked up and beaten and their passports taken away. You'd think it couldn't happen these days, but it still does. Very dangerous.

Um. I have to violate my no thinking rule and think about it. We usually let straight rideshare/ticket barter slide. Hmmm.

Weird, but burny and he actually wants to go, so it seems okay to me.
I'm more bothered by camps marketing sometimes.

At least it isn't a furry hat.

You could ask him to change the playa name to anything else, though that sort of thing is common practice on most boards, presuming appropriate behavior.
It is always considered a huge no-no to pretend you aren't associated, if you are.
So often such a name choice is more an expression of honesty, than marketing.

Doesn't bother me either way.

He's going to pull the commercial link in his sig-line, which is where the "commerce" was lurking. Otherwise, sounds straight up to me, and he's very communicative if needed.
