Coffee and Cigarettes (and whiskey from time to time) Theme

Post by hungrysteve » Mon Dec 11, 2006 9:46 pm

Would like to make a Coffee and Cigarettes theme camp for 2007 but have no experience to go about it. Any advice? Any experienced people want to help out? Think about it, what goes together like coffee and cigarettes?

hahaaa....coffee ciggerettes and my computer!

But thats why I leave "it", my cell phone,tv,microwave at home....

I would suggest a coffee cafe for you to do...just a bunch of couchs and a coffeee bar, with multiple ciggerette (heavier then playa dust)Sand ashtrays.

Down fall that would make you ...camp personnel responsible for mooping all the ciggy butts out!
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

Well, I will pick up all the butts, I want to gift the coffee and cigs. I figure I can get tobacco companies to give me cigs as promos and I can then give them away at the coffee bar. Getting coffee donated may be more difficult but maybe somebody knows somebody. Only time will tell I suppose.

Why don't you just mist people in the face with fertilizer-scented water like a normal hippie? Isn't it kind of a cheap-ass trick to re-"gift" promo cigarettes? What's your target demographic -- bums who live under the overpass? Just my opinion, but shouldn't you be purchasing organic Indian grown fair trade anarcho-syndicalist peasant tobacco if you want to resemble a green theme theme camp?

On a practical note, don't let DPWers steal your lighters, they're fucking notorious.

If you want cig co's to give you product, then they will want an exchange for their money, which would be advertising, which is verboten at BM.

Just come with a LOT of coffee and methods to make it, and a case of cheep cigarettes. Set it up small, with music in the background. See how long it lasts. Just do what you feel you can economically handle. BM is about potlatching, gifting, seeing how much money you can set on fire.
I'll be in my blanket fort until further notice.

So you want us to smoke shitty cirgarettes when we could get free premiums?
If there isn't a banner proclaiming brands, what's the harm?

Should we use a small piece of a rolling paper to cover the Camel or Marlboro or whatever so nobody can see the name?

Buy several big bags of flavored tobacco (I know, sounds bad, but it isn't), a small roller or two, a big bag of filters (about 2 cents per filter) and rolling papers. Let folks roll their own smokes with their own choice of tobacco.

glue the little rollers to the table so they dont wander off, maybe stamp the papers with something Burning Man related (time consuming, tho).

Big bag of flavored tobacco from Zen costs about $10 and is enough for about 200 cigarettes (guessing a bit). Rolling machine is $5, 200 filters cost $2.50. Probably could stock your camp with tobacco stuff for under $40.

I was very skeptical of flavored tobacco before I tried it, mainly because I HATE flavored coffee. But the flavoring is just barely noticeable and produces a much more pleasant smoke. Vanilla flavor is the best.

Yep, I know rolling cigarettes in a storm can be a bithc, and the individual leaves, and the filters, present a moop hazard. Perhaps you could have an interior room in a dome, vented, for rolling. This would cut down on the moop problems.

You could promote natural tasty plants instead of some corporate crap. Mugwort is a nice cheap smoke. Its nice and smooth and smokes real nice.

Advertising was my biggest concern and I know enough to know that isn't allowed, but typically they just want people to try their brand and know what brand they are trying. When I get free cigs (there are people that go to Portland bars and just give them away) the person isn't doing anything to promote the brand other than give away the cigs.

I also considered the rolling thing since I typically roll my own. Tobacco dries out really easily though and I figure on the playa, it would dry out really quickly and be a shitty smoke.

Really, I just like drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes and was hoping I could make a cool vibe and attract other people who like to do the same. Maybe I don't even have to provide the cigs, but I am going to contact some companies regardless and see what they have to say. If they say yes and people don't want to recieve donations from a big corporation, well more smokes for me.

The cigs are really the last of my worries. Getting enough water to make a bunch of coffee will be no easy task. Getting rid of the water will be even harder. Maybe just making a smokers lounge would be easier. Couches and ashtrays.

giving away free stuff

Post by EspressoDude » Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:44 pm

 Shouldn't really be much different than the free condoms that several camps give away that are brand labelled.

And, haven't seen many used clowndoms laying around the playa, have seen a bunch of butts though.

Dont let concerns about dry tobacco stop you from pursuing the roll-your-own approach. I kept my tobacco in zip lock bags containing several humidifying discs. Worked like a charm. Usually the discs are given out for free by the tobacco store. If not, they should only cost pennies.
