Huh, I thought......

Post by Jamm'in » Sat Mar 17, 2007 8:26 pm

I was just surfing the tube tonight and came across a commercial about BurningMan. Maybe not about it but,...... it was involving a son and father. The father had new peircings, and was trying to "bond" with his son, then he spills out., "lets get a tattoo on out back before we head to burning man,!" ?? I didnt think burning man wanted its name publicized,....... Has anyone else seen this commercial??

There was a microsoft commercial that came out a few months back. Never saw it but that sounds similar.
Wouldn't the Org have to give permission for the name to be used in such a context?

My ears pricked up when I heard/saw that commercial too....I didn't feel that the intent was to denegrate the event, but wonder about the regs governing the mere mention of it as a destination.

Where'd you get that idea? Of course "they' want the festival publicized.

The word you might be thinking of is Commericalized. The BMORG doesn't wat the Burning Man name, logo etc to be used to promote products etc.

However that doesn't mean you can't talk about Burning Man, refer to it, etc. It's a part of the public culture. Wanna use it as the punchline of a joke? Refer to it in a commercial as a way to delineate a character? You can do that. Burning Man is no different than other Public Entity or licensed product.

I think the father's an idiot for getting a tattoo *right* before the Burn.

They'd hit the Playa, clothes off, sun blasting right on their new tattoos, guess what? A year later, their expensive tattoo that they're STUCK with for life looks like crap because of UV skin cell damage! Ink bursts out of the cells, scattering the detail, uck!

No tattoo artist with an ounce of self-respect would do them. I wouldn't contemplate getting new ink sooner than four months before I Burn.

And again, you say what I was thinking. I finally have enough money to get another tattoo and its summer(might as well be where i live). That combined with the potential placement of said ink =probably gonna have to wait until september. Oh well, worth it eh?

I came from there originally, so I know what the weather's like right now. No, in that case, I'd wait until after the Burn. You can always show it off next year.

It got my right upper arm panel done in March a few years ago and it was nicely healed by the Burn. But I'm closer to the latitudinal equinox than Santa Cruz. Not quite as Mediterranean.

I don't doubt it'll be healed. My last one was mostly done by two weeks, and completely smooth by three. I'm just worried about having to either a)let it heal in the sun or b) sweat it out in long sleeves.

Looks like I'm going to have to, in any case. Don't think I'll make it this year. Too much money and not enough enjoyment.

That's what I was thinking. I was going to write "March should be okay" but as I remember, daffodils are springing up, everything is blooming, sun's nice and bluebird skies. Time to doff the jackets and sweaters and break out t-shirts and camis and shorts.

Yes, the Commericalized. Just curious........it has definatly got its name out there.

It would be cool to have some new body art to show off at the playa, but Id probably wait to get one.....

Indeed. It's been 60+ for the past week or two, and it's only gettin hotter. As a person who's lived in SC her whole life, termperature change greatly affects me. The difference between 55 and 60 can be a light jacket. As a kid it didn't affect me (bike shorts in the middle of winter), but age and Climate Change has changed all that.

I'm getting a tattoo, if all goes as planned, on my birthday in mid-May. Might the playa sun damage the ink?

My first tatto I ever got, I got in Spain when my friend and I were travelling and realised we were almost broke. Instead of paying for hostels we camped on a beach by the Mediterranean for a week and a half. Spent the money saved on skin ink ... of course, that kind of sucked cause the closest I was getting to a bath was swimming in the sea. Once I had my tattoo the best I could do was go in up to my waist.

Still, in the long run it was worth it to save the quality. Perhaps I should get my new one sooner...../?

You should wear sunblock on your tattoos after they are healed. The colors will fade.

SUn isnt going to affect it awhole lot. I got this sun on my back in Thailand 12 years ago, swpend a lot of time in the sun and havent had a problem. Thats the black ink work.

Color is going to fade over a lifetime of sun exposure.

Won't be coloured. Don't have any with colour, don't ever intend to get any. Don't really have a problem with it but it just isn't my style. i like simple, black n white tattoos.

....I saw the commercial a few days ago, my inital reaction was "Uck!"

I still cannot recall what the ad was for (thank Larry!)
