Missing Codec Scams

Post by MikeVDS » Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:30 am

Just a reminder, since I see one of those scams again. If you go to some porn, naughty actress, whatever site, and it says you're missing a codec to play some video, DO NOT INSTALL IT! It's 99% likely a virus.

Also..

If you find one of these posts, please, PLEASE report it on Case Studies as soon as you see it (if it already hasn't been reported). When I log in it's the first area I check, and if there's anything unfixed there it will be dealt with by one of your helpful, smiling, friendly moderator type folk immedjitly.

Thanks for your help in keeping our playground safe...

When viewing porn, I *always* use the free-open source "latex codec" which provides only a slight reduction in sensation, and keeps my sessions virus free.

(doesn't hurt, also, to use a non-microsoft viewer)

A lot of information here.
They mention specific software sites that are problems.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.
