Purchase a bike between the Reno Airport and BRC?

Post by INSANEPOOKIE » Sun May 13, 2007 6:52 am

Heya!

Are there any close stores/shops that would be selling cheap bikes that would be easily accessed between the trip from the Reno Airport to BRC?

My current guess is that I will be attempting to find a ride share that meets up at the airport Sunday night or early Monday if that matters in the availability of bikes.

Thanks for any useful info.

Bikes are tough to come by that late, since ten or twenty thousand people are all vying for them. Take a look at
http://civilizedexplorer.pbwiki.com/CivExReno
and do a search (use the box in uppper right corner) for bikes or bicycle or just browse for bikes and rentals. I'd advise reserving ahead if possible, but others may have better information on where to buy.

Theres a fellow who sells bikes on the side of the road in Gerlach, $20-40 buck, total playa bikes but the 3 we bought made it thru the week and are being refurbished to return this year. If you are getting there Sunday/Monday, he should still have some decent selection.

And your exit plan should always include what to do with the bike you purchased. Please don't leave it on the playa as so many folks do.

Even before the burn, the selection is not impressive in reno.
Some people do better with cheap new ones.

Good info to know, thanks!

And AntiM: I believe leaving crap behind could be one of the few things that I consider sinful :)
Last year I lost my backpack so I made sure to pick up 3x more than I intended to in an effort to counter balance my unintentional litter.

I will be set up to take junk bikes on playa off the hands of those that do not want them. I intend to weld them together (bolt if its alloy) into a large sculpture, to grow as the years go. I already haul tractor trailers out there for other needs so backhauling bikes would be easy.

This will be for junkers as they will be cut in half and welded up.

True, but if a bike is a must I wouldn't count on it. You might consider having
a cheap or fold up bike shipped to yourself in advance , to be held and picked up at the Reno Post Office or UPS or ??? ( better check to see if they will hold it). Maybe a local Reno burner can help by picking up the bike for you ?

Ahhh HAW! A fold up bike may be the best bet for myself! That is more depending on whom I end up setting a rideshare up with. I do like the idea of a compact bike to lessen the annoyance of huffing it away from BRC.

I saw a foldup with belt drive and internal gears.
You could just drag it with you on the subway without worrying about grease.
Japanese made.

Make sure that thing fits you before you go.
Get a good bike lock.

The bike arrived and it took perhaps less than 2 minutes to become rideable. It rides good enough for my needs.

Thanks for the suggestion of a bike lock. It's annoying to not be carefree but last year it was not uncommon to hear of people having their bikes "borrowed" without their permission.

The python is a useful low end lock.
It comes with a six foot cable and you can get longer.
You can lock both wheels with it.
A folding bike may be a bigger target.
I've even used the python to lock my coat.
Sadly capes and coats have been stolen even before the event starts.
