Bike Repair camps....? None as far as we know.......
If you haven't heard or discovered yet, there will NOT be any public bike repair on the playa this year.
ByB threw in the towel after 2006, Johnny and the Playa Cruisers gave up in 2005. The main guy at the Bike Guild near Center camp has been in Eastern Europe for some time now so we can't confirm their existence at this point either.
So that means, there is NO public bike repair on the playa for 2007.
What the hell are you gonna do??
My recommendation- take care of your bike like you would prep your car- make sure it is functional and all systems and backup systems are in roadworthy condition before you hit the road. Keeping your bike in decent shape is going to cost a lot less than a car. and you can't use your car for the week you are there, unless you have a disabled placard on it.
How much did your ticket cost?
How much for a brake job on your car, for the gas you are filling it with numerous times?
How much are you spending on beer and or drugs?
And your spiffy fur coat is what?
expect your bike repair needs to be less than any of that, but more than $20 -50,esp 3 and a half weeks before the burn.

We also said this 2 years ago, when bike camp's appearance became spotty.
Bring extras. Master links to fit your chain. Green-gorilla-snot filled tubes. Axle nuts. Patch kit. A tire pump. Extra brake pucks. BATTERIES for your REQUIRED LIGHTS! If you have a key lock (silly you) make an extra key and stash it in your car, and hang the original from a string around yer neck! Basic tools. Not only will you be able to fix your bike, BUT you will be able to help someone nearby when theirs breaks.
I run airless (semi-solid) tires, good idea but late unless you can find them for sale locally - you can try but I don't think you'll be able to get them shipped to you in time now.

I've had my share of bike repair on the playa at ByB for the last couple of years. We are taking a break this year due to the Radical Self Entitlement issues we have increasingly experienced.
By all means if you want to carry the torch I encourage you and will dole out advice, but I'm taking a year off.

I'm personally glad to hear it. I watched you guys work your butts off, often for people with serious entitlement issues. Bravo for your hard work, and even if you never do it again, you have been appreciated by many, even if not by all.fatcog wrote:I've had my share of bike repair on the playa at ByB for the last couple of years. I'm "Johnny" of Johnny and the Playa Cruizers.
We did give it up in 2005, it was just too much work... hell, I didn't even go! But this year we are tentatively planning to bring some tools and supplies for a do-it-yourself kind of thing.
We won't be in the usual 9:00 and Esplanade spot, but we'll probably be near 9:00 a few streets back somewhere.

As a neighbor to ByB last year, I was constantly amazed at the never ending stream of people waiting to get their bike fixed. I wondered at the time how you guys could stand it when you got some of the obvious hotheads with major RSE issues. It was astounding to witness the arrogance of some folks there. Congrats on taking the time for yourselves this year. You definitely deserve it!

A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

Word! Also as their neighbor (and volunteer child distraction service) we got a lot of people watching done with the ByB line. In fact I looked up last years city on google earth, zoomed in to the plaza, and didn't even have to think about compass points because the line for bike repair was clearly visible!bigbluedoggy wrote:As a neighbor to ByB last year, I was constantly amazed at the never ending stream of people waiting to get their bike fixed. WHEEEEEEEEEEE!
Heroic work by the bike guys without enough tools.
Not everyone is unappreciative.
I saw a girl in the dust wrestling with two mismatched plastic widgets attempting to change a tire and she had clearly never done this before.
I felt compelled to get her some serious tire tools, as it's harder than it looks.
She was so happy to succeed at it.
And here is the last word on bicycle maintenance-

"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire
It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

DD Bike Repair and Decor
Some friends of mine from Dallas have a pretty large theme camp I think in the vicinity of 4:30 and Artic.
