I'd try REI.

2225 Harvard Way
Reno, NV 89502
(775) 828-9090

Provided you have a decent budget.

I hear the instant ones aren't strong enough, but you may know different.

Aren't strong enough? Why? No i don't know anything...being a newbie! Any help/advice is appreciated!!

I am just rubbish at putting up tents and thought a pop-up one would be great!

What tent is best to buy then? I'm travelling, and currently in Ecuador, so can't carry much... was hoping to buy cheap, or find one in a thrift store... any ideas would be great :)

Thank you :)

I haven't found a cheap one I thought was worth setting on fire, but some people bring cheap ones and put them in shrouded areas or shade tents.
I'm looking myself these days.
I think a four season is called for to keep the dust out but some people tarp them.
You need shade over the tent if you want to sleep in the day at all.

How cheap?

Been there 2X, in a tent. Not much keeps the dust out. I'd try Target, etc. How many people do you have? I like thrift stores but never see many tents there.

I was planning on stopping at Twin City Surplus (recommended on the BM site as I pass through Reno on my way out to the playa. Their website shows a nice 2-man dome that should be silly-easy to set up and about as cheap as you're going to get it
2-Man Dome
I'd not count on getting it there in Reno, though, unless you're early. Think of all the unprepared latecomers who'll grab up whatever they can find, and that's convenient.

Maybe you could order something like that for pick up if you call them.
It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.
