need more setup time

Post by pinktinker » Mon Jan 21, 2008 10:04 pm

OK, I know that some people are able to enter the event earlier than Monday to setup, notably those who are involved with larger projects...I am bringing a large, complicated project which requires a lot of setup time. Wondering what I need to do to get in a day or two early, so my camp is ready to go by Monday?

There's a point in the process if you're a theme camp or a placed art installation, but other than that, I don't think it is easy. You'd have to ask the actual Burning man folks, their email addy is at the bottom of the page. The office may be busy with tickets though, be a little patient.

If you are with a large registered theme camp I don't think you'll have any trouble getting early access. Early Access, however, means the Saturday before they open the gate which really only gives you 2 days of extra time. Getting in earlier than that could be more difficult unless you can join DPW and work all day and then set up your theme camp at night.

It's actually not hard if you genuinely need to get in early. Is there a reason you cannot set up your project in the first couple of days of the event? Most people do set-up after the event opens. If you have something interactive worth having up all week or something that cannot be completed by Wednesday or so if you don't get in early, you'll most likely be granted early entry. The additional requirement is that you register as a theme camp and fill out the proper paperwork on time. Your "theme" will probably be focused around your art and can be as simple as a chill space where people are welcome to talk about your project. So start reading up about theme camp registration and make sure you fill out all the forms on time. They will hit you with one after another about how many people you need early, what projects you have planned, etc.
