Using public land for theme camp overflow?

Post by bdeywoo » Thu May 22, 2008 8:36 am

We are likely running into a space issue with the number of people we have in our camp this year. If like last year we are given the same amount of space we'll be far too big. Is it acceptable or frowned upon to go find some public space, on early entry weekend to make a second camp at?

Unassigned space is just that. Take what you need, but don't do what I saw last year, which is to cordon off large blocks of space and then not use it. I ran into this in a few areas and that ended up causing me to be 2 streets farther back than I wanted to be.
It's going to be alright.

It would be small, near the last ring and as far out of the way as possible. We are not greedy, so its not an issue of trying to take some prime real estate. We just figure on Saturday if we split forces one can work on the theme camp the other can get a shade structure up in the public area for our over flow, we'd have some one camped there from day 1.

I have seen several larger theme camps with seperate "outposts".

It is a common thing to do so that they can have an escape from the madness.
But I am talking about really big theme camps.

You can take whatever land you need, and there is no reason to claim it as an "outpost" unless you really want to.

As for those flagged off areas, check with the placer for the zone that you are in and make sure that it isn't for DPW
or some other special purpose before moving the tape and wedging yourself in there.
Different placers have different attitudes about this practice.

The majority off those flagged off areas are from asshats that take more land than they need and then end up wasting space
by not letting other people fill it in or by a group of old folks with thier RV's and a friend holding thier area until thy get there.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Our experience has been that you cannot claim open camping space until midnight on Sunday. The placers will make you move....only dedicated themecamp areas are 'inhabitable' 'til the gates open. They'll probably limit the number of early arrivals allowed in from your camp, so don't count on all of your people arriving early..

That's not true, unless you are trying to get prime estate that is neighbored to theme camp reserved areas.

...it really does depend on the placer for the zone you are trying to camp in.

If bdeywoo is wanting to grab land in the outer rings, there prob won't be a problem as long as someone is camping there from the git-go.

That was my experience a few years ago... We weren't trying to claim prime real estate either. In our case the placers were totally willing to work with us but they ended up moving us from where we were setting up and placing us instead of us choosing our space. I'd check with your placer before you start setting up to make sure the spot you pick is cool....

We had no problems setting up a camp in open camping on Saturday last year.
