Roof Turbines to expel heat ?

Post by TristanX » Sun Jun 01, 2008 5:18 pm

I am building a dome for 2008 BM and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with passive roof turbines

like this link

i plan on having the dome pretty well sealed up and I am going to run a swamp cooler inside .. so i do want to expel heat but keep the cool air inside

any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

My first year I saw one on top of a very well covered dome. It seemed to make sense to me but I have no idea how well it actually worked. I say go for it.

Vents are intended to use the stack effect.
You don't need a turbine for this.
The placement is what is important.
The vent should be as high as possible and the intake as low as possible.
If the air inside is cooler than the outside, this will bring in hot air.
If you can create an "attic" or space separate from the interior, then venting helps tremendously.
This is the principle of a vented attic.
With high winds, stack effect may not be needed for ventilation.
I seem to recall some high scoops on chimneys used in desert areas, along with geothermal cooling.

A high tube increases the stack effect by it's height.
All you need for this is a pipe.
Everything else is for keeping rain out.
Some tents have velcro flaps for this purpose.
High and low openings and hot air creates air in motion, powered by the heat.

The turbine vent is big! I just put one on my place and it is way bigger then the pic gives it credit. You'd have to make sure so secure it goodly to the framework of ur dome. Look in RV and Marine stores/websites for solar powered vents.
