no, i am not jackrabbit, but i have a burningman announcement i hope will capture your heart, mind, and any extra cash you may have just laying around....!
Some amazing friends of mine have been working on a kinetic sculpture for burningman called the Lepidodgera, which is a breathtaking steel butterfly with a wing span of 54’ perched on a dodge van chrysalis. the butterfly is mobile, fueling it's gasifier off of garbage it will collect around the playa during the event. the wings move hydraulically, and at night boasts interactive colour changing wings and flame effects. the artists intend to give lectures on gasification throughout the week, and in the future at other venues.
my description doesn't really do it justice, if you would like to learn more about this incredible kinetic sculpture and the wonderful artists involved in it's creation please visit their website at www.lepidodgera.com
this piece is a recipient of a burningman grant, yet it still needs additional funds to be completed. any donations to this project will be greatly appreciated. the information for their paypal acct can be found at http://lepidodgera.com/?page_id=44
thanks!

This is a very, VERY interesting project. I'm sort of diggin the gasifier thing. Got to work a veyr small bit on mecabolic last year, Jim Mason's gassified vehicle project. That was lot of fun.
But... the one problem you may encounter is that eplaya is a place specifically set up for interactions without the stigmas of money, buying or selling (save for tickets in that specific area of the board), and people generally disregard a first (or early) post asking for funding for a project. Sort of a “Yeah, you and everybody else so get in lineâ€

Hey... you're in Oakland. Find the Shipyard. That's where Mason was working out of. They had some permiting issues a while back, but I think they got worked out, or are at least getting worked out.
Lots of gasification stuff going on there I hear. Heck, for all I know you may well be working out of there already.

yes, this lepidodgera is being built at the shipyard, but no, it is not one of jim mason's. we all know jim, but we have our own engineer who designed and built the gasifier that is being used on the butterfly.
gyre, if it looks like the same butterfly on a dodge, then yes. it was transported to the playa last year, and vast improvements have been made to assure that the lep. is more functional this year.
thank you for recognizing how awesome this sweet project is, i know i'm personally very excited to see it finished and fluttering it's 55' wings around the playa.
this thing is going to run on dried garbage donations... i just think its so fucking cool!!! my housemate is one of the main artists working on it, and i would join her except that my physical health makes me mostly useless. instead, i'm trying to fund raise for them, such is my enthusiasm.
also, please bear in mind that your contribution will eventually be shared in the greater community, not just burningman. the lepidodgera will make appearances thiis fall after burningman at bay area schools, teaching kids about green energy in a fun and creative way.

It must be the same one.
It had really big flipping wings and pretty much filled the lot next to the shipyard.
A bunch of us were holding up the wings for welding and assembly/ disassembly.
I saw it a lot on the way, but I missed it on the playa.
It looked like a pretty good van they were ripping the sides off of.
