Newbie from Portland

Post by thorfio » Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:57 pm

Hi folks,

I've been wanting to attend the Burn for at least 5-6 years now and this year I'm finally on my way. Extremely nervous about whether or not I'm well enough prepared but also very excited to be part of it all!!! Anyone happen to know exactly how long it takes to get to the playa from Reno?

Much Appreciated,
- Matt from Portland

matt-
you're coming from portland.
there's no reason to go through reno if you're driving from portland oregon.

cut over to alturas and come in from the west.
almost no line of traffic. it's great.
have fun.

blah blah
blow.

Matt, m'man...are you driving solo? Make sure you're well rested. Pull over and sleep...the road at night can be real scary! Go to http://gwally.com/directions/ for route alternatives to Gerlach and BRC!

Have a blast, DP

Matt...

Portland burner here. Shoot me a note if you're driving and need trip advice or anything else. One thing I -strongly- recommend is to triple-check your radiator, battery and oil before you go because although it's not a terribly long drive, it's a goddamn desolate one if you break down. If you can latch onto a caravan that's a good idea too, but make sure they at least look like solid vehicles or you're gonna be pulling over every 20 miles waiting for somebody to fix their shit 'cause they're trying to haul eight couches, a generator, three thousand pounds of iron and a refrigerator in a single-axle trailer behind their VW bus.

If you go at night and the moon is out, be especially vigilant for deer on the road 'cause those suicidal fuckers come out of nowhere at you.

Cheers!

In my experience it is especially important to watch for deer in the 2 hours surrounding dusk or dawn. I regularly see 20+ Deer on the drive from Aurora to BRC. Use your peripheral vision to spot things. I drive the speed limit on hwy 97 because it is a dangerous road. Distances are hard for me to judge on that road. It is a beautiful drive. I usually drive it at night but recommend driving it by day.
