need fabric for dome and tunnels

Post by Mic » Fri Jul 25, 2008 12:05 pm

Does anyone know where I can get hold of cheap fabric in San Fran or Reno? I'm trying to get or make a dome of material, radius 9 foot, height 9 foot. I guess as cheap as possilbe without tearing in the wind would be ideal. Waterproof not necessary. Also for making some long tunnel-like things - a strip of 10 foot by 100 foot ultimately.

I think I'll be having to do allot of sewing .. . .

I take it you don't want to use a parachute?

Solar reflective material

I just bought this cool reflective sewable material on ebay. She says it's imperfect but flaws are extremely minor.Check out #280248687111. She also sells a two dollar square foot sample if you want to check it out first

er... I don't see why not. Could be ideal - you know of any being thrown out?

Cheers Marscrumbs - Looks interesting. I'll get onto them if I don't find cheaper for sure. . .

Knit shade cloth can be bought by the foot, usually 12 ft wide in black or green, at many hardware stores, lumber yards, garden supply stores or tarp & awning shoppes. Expect about 35 cents per square foot.

A parachute will probably run you around $50. Check sportmansguide.com, ebay, local army surplus stores. Also you'll need a parachute of 28.26 ft. diameter for a 18 foot diameter dome. A 30 foot parachute or 32 ft seem to be common sizes and won't fit perfectly but will work.

Also, parachutes are not ideal, but they are good enough. Other materials block out the light better. I like them because they are about as cheap and easy as you can get. In most cases I'd rather go with a parachute which works fine and spend my time and money elsewhere. If it gets hot, pull up the sides. Clips are nice to keep the sides down and to clip them up.
