Shade structure advice please

Post by jj-jj-jj » Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:37 am

I have 2 of these tents
http://www.springbar.com/explore/vagabo ... bond4.html
(to be arranged side by side)

and a 12' x 24' aluminet shade
http://www.shadeclothstore.com/products ... t-172.html

The tents include all materials and I have 18" stakes and rebar so setup will be no problem. However, I do not know how to construct a structure for shade (and maybe wind) defense using the aluminet. What exactly do I need? Poles? How many? How much higher than the tents? Totally flat or at an angle? And what is best way to secure the shade so that high winds won't be a problem? Have never done this before.

Thanking you in advance...

Sure, six poles a foot or so taller than the tents, couple hundred feet of 3/8 braided rope, parachute cord or clothesline to tie the grommets to the rope, buy a basic book on knots, and figure it out when you get there, ask a smart looking neighbor if you need help.

shade structure

Our shade structures are made from 1" emt conduit, steel fittings and ball ties to attach our tarp(s).

For our tent shade structure we use a flat top (90 degree flat fittings).

Conduit usually comes in 10' lengths, so you'll need to be able to cut them if you want a height and/or width less than 10' (we go with 5' high for our tent shade).

Put together roof first, attach your aluminet, then add the legs. Be sure to have some homies to help it down at this point. Pound in rebar straight down where you want the legs and then place the legs over the rebar. We reinforce the structure with a couple more pieces of rebar and ratchet straps along the sides. This setup is playa-tested and passed with flying colors.

If you decide to go with a length and/or width greater than ten feet you'll want to add additional legs and additional reinforcement.

Draw it out and you'll be able to figure out quantities of everything you need.

To see what the fittings look like check out creativeshelters.com. Too late to order from them but you should be able to get everything you need at a home improvement store.

Good luck!
