Best way to carry extra gas for generator???

What's the best way to carry extra gasoline (for the generator) if I'm in a car?

My friends are letting me use their generator so long as I bring the extra gas it will take per day.

Which means about 18 gallons.

I figure I won't bring all of it at once, but make a trip into Empire/Gerlach on the Burner Bus Shuttle to buy more mid week.

But how do I safely transport extra gas in my little Corrolla?

I've talked to an auto parts guy who has 5 gallon containers. He says metal is better than plastic. Any thoughts?

And should I strap it to the top of the car or put it in the trunk?

Yikes.
That's always an issue with cars........
you can't have any leakage if it's in the trunk, or, one spark and..........
If you had a way to put it on the outside, like a rack or whatever....at least no vapor worries.......
Metal cans are stronger, but, the new plastic ones are pretty good. Make sure it seals really well. Think about thermal expansion in the sun and heat, too...... If you fill it to full, it can build pretty high pressures if in sun and heat, because it expands greatly when heated.

If you can, after filling, not totally full, squeeze the sides in some and then seal the cap, it will allow for some of the expansion before stressing the can material.

Mostly, I'd try not to have it in the trunk or passenger compartment, though.......

The other side is, if you can put them upright and really secure on the outside of the vehicle, is to fill 3/4 full and leave the cap a little loose, it'll then expand and outgas without building pressure.
But:
It can and will probably dribble some fuel.....so, I'd not want it on the car, maybe one of those baskets that goes in a receiver hitch on the back bumper.....
