I hate to be begging this year but I see no other way. I was granted a super-discount ticket in '08, $95.00. That was a one-time shot. Next year, '09, I will apply for another low-income ticket. But the kicker is that I can't afford both a ticket and gas. I'd hate to miss a year.

Next year will be my sixth. I have all my stuff allready. I get my food from gleaners and foodstamps, so don't tell me I can afford it. I'm paying my monthly utilities with creditcard checks. I owe $1800.00 on a creditcard and I will probably have to default in 2 weeks.I still owe that $95.00 ticket on the creditcard.I used my creditcard in a cash machine on the way to Reno.

I used the tip money I got at centercamp coffee to get home this year.
I am also gratefull that my neigbors gifted me a new bike when they left early this year. Someone else gifted me a box of apples and a box of oranges on exodus day. Those I sold at a local fall festival for gas money.

If there are any burners in Sutter County California, I could really use a job. I'd rather earn my own way. I've applied all over here. The only interveiw I was granted was at a Perko's restaurant for a dishwashing job. I havent had any job offers, however. Yet I keep trying...

I love burning man myself; but I think if I were in your position, I would definately take the year off and work on improving my financial position. It's hard to believe, buty there are some things that are more important than BM. Work on getting your priorities in order.

I'm an old fart in a bit of a financial hole myself, but I work for every penny that comes in. When it gets too bad, I drive a f#$%^&* truck for a while.

Sounds like you ought to go back to Perko's and pursue that job, Sir. Very important to "follow up" after a job interview.

Then look me up in Black Rock City, this year or next, and I'll give your bike a tune-up.

In some places there really is no work.
The most highly skilled friend I have can't find work now.
He is doing odd jobs, including grave digging (not a joke, by hand).

I hope you can make it next year.
In times like this, we need it the most.

Some art projects pay for labor at times, especially during clean up when everyone wants to leave.
Of course, you have to be there first.
Some volunteer jobs and camp work includes a ticket.
I don't know any specifics though.

I have seen tickets offered for driving a truck last minute to the burn.
Keep trying.

If you have any special skills, try to let the right people know.

Personally I give up doing anything the rest of the year for outside entertainment.
About to put my phone on voip to justify net access.
It's more bang for the buck to go to burning man.
Gas cost is murder even at $2 a gallon from here though.

Thank you everyone for the kind advice. I will call on the Perko"s manager tomorrow. Yes, jobs are hard to get here.
Rush personnell and Express agencys have given me zero referrals in three months. Rush people had me call Colusa and Chico offices also. I usually just show up places and ask for an application. I check Caljobs website every week and stop by the employment office when I drive to town.
I have a Class B license, but local trucker"s want Class A owner operators. I live in a rural area. I went to a jobfair last month and filled out apps and got no responces. I'm sure there are millions of Americans just like me. Employers can pick the best, and well, realistically, I'm not the most desirable of employees. I'm a registered felon, unfit, over fifty and have been unemployed for 5 years.
I even tried selling my blood in Reno, but I'm on heart meds and fainted when they were checking my veins...
Economically, in the broader national sense, we are all in the path of radical change. I've even responded to Obama's website. If he starts a national works program, I'll be there. My grandfather worked in CCC and WPA camps before WWII, and so can I.

As far as temp agencies go, you need to keep on them about getting you work. I've used the temp route a lot when I have been between jobs, and I have had to go back to them and remind them I wanted to work a few times before they would send me out on a job. (Remind them politely, of course. The image you want to project is that you really, really want to work.)

One of the reasons I have kept living here, in Madison, Wisconsin, is that the area is pretty recession proof. Its economy is spread between the State government, the University of Wisconsin--Madison (one of the largest campuses around), and various high tech industries. Between those three, and all the support industries (grocery stores, restaurants, way more clothing and bookstores than believable, etc), someone always seems to be hiring-- either permanent or temp workers.

Anyway, good luck! I've only made it to one Burn, so you're still batting a better average than me!

I was out of a job for a while myself and I couldn't find anything. No one called back, heard a lot of your over qualified or underqualified, a bunch of excuses.

I finally got a job working with my boyfriend in the office part of the Shop he works maintance for. I had a leg in the door already because they knew someone who would vouch for me and it has been really good. Plus now we can carpool which saves some cash.

Ask around your family friends and neighbors to see if anyone could get your foot and resume in the door. Also, I found some good tips online for writing a really good resume, It really does help to have a good one.

I am sorry. I should have not begged for anything. I will find a way. I suppose I had the holiday blues and was felling sorry for myself. I'm over it now. I'm letting go of some of my things. I don't need all this crap. I sold a shotgun and a telescope today for a hundred bucks. The pawnshop didn't want my coleman stove and camera , so I'll sell them at a yardsale. It might pay for those those new interviewing duds...

And don't forget to factor in the cost of moving or duplicating a residence.

You must not sell many computers.
If they aren't fairly new or collectible, resale isn't very high.
And most people are finding them economically necessary.
Online ads are cheaper or free, in some cases.
You can't properly buy or sell online without one.
And some employers only make contact by email.

I would suggest that if you are selling things that pawn shops and so on are the last places to sell anything.
Start with specialty locations such as gun forums and friends for guns, same for anything someone might find useful, telescope, stereo equipment, etc.
Ebay is good for some things.
Often what is useless in one area is collectible in another.

When I didn't get fair offers on some comic books, I put ads in the national trade publication.
I spent a lot of time and money doing so and it took years to sell them all.
I also got $4500 more than I originally asked for.

Don't forget craigslist though it may not be useful where you are.
They ban many things, so many people are boycotting them.

retail. I don't think this year will be the same as others, but this is usually a good time of year for seasonal hiring. good workers usually stay.

I got 5 gas cans. Four are 2 1/2 gal. and two are 1 1/2 gal. They are the plastic kind. That eliminates one fuel stop, two more stops to manage.

I'll mail off my low-income application on the 26th of January. I'll use a creditcard check to buy a money order and pay it off down the road...

I reapplied for my MediCal card on Friday. I have to reapply every six months. My foodstamp card was approved. That's $176.00/ month. I have too much stuff to qualify for general assistance, and I'm not going to lie like some folks...California rehab office has me classed at level 3 which is currently unfunded. I have a mental disorder but I am high functioning. My meds are $10.00 at Wal-mart for 90 pills, every three months.

I got approved for the Sutter County brownbag program,and I reapply for the Federal food program in two weeks.

I'm a dumpster diver now. I use craigslist and freecycle. I collect cans and bottles at roadside for gas and stamp money. I attended the Levee church for the Homeless in Yuba City on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I live alone you know. I'm luckier than most, I have a cabin to live in. I can apply for SSI in February 2013, only four years to easy street...

I still pay my utilities with creditcard checks. Yeah, I know. I have $241.00 credit on my PG&E bill, Decembers cost was $35.00. So I pay $70.00/ mth. for sewage/water, and $13.00/mth for phone . My isp is netzero $9.95/mth. My garbage bil is $72.12 every 3 months. A man can get by with a lot less than he might think.

I'm still unemployed, only one interveiw and not one referall in 5 months. I use the caljobs website and don't have to drive 20 miles to town to check. This area has one off the highest unemployment rates in California.

sounds like your making the best of it, and the way things are going, thats about all you can do.

however, you dont need the employment centers to find you jobs. just keep an eye open for local businesses in need of employees.

even a McJob is still a job, and may give you a bit of free food when you are working.
