What's a Zone Trip?

Post by sattelite5812 » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:36 am

I've often heard this term referenced in both Burner and Cacophony circles, but can't seem to find any more of a definition than I could glean from the context; which seems to refer to some type of cacophonous (and/or meaningful) rampage toward some predestined location. Not sure how to differentiate that from the average Caco outing, but it sounds like a good time!

Even Wikipedia - which has entries for both Burning Man and the Cacophony Society - failed me in my quest to understand this concept... Any savvy soul out there care to enlighten my inquiring mind?

A Zona Trip would be coming to Arizona to visit Burners...Yeah AZBurners!!

Of course that is not what you asked about...I have no idea about a Zone (Only) Trip.

The first Burning Man on the playa was a Cacophoney "Zone Trip" that allowed the effigy that Harvey hadn't been allowed to burn on Baker Beach to tag along and get burned in the Black Rock Desert.

according to what I have read, a Zone Trip was a Cacophony event involving a trek to some location, usually distant, where, upon arrival, a line was drawn symbolizing a threshold between the default world and a temporary autonomous zone. Participants would step over the line into whatever madness they decided to create on that trip. The debt Burning Man owes to the Cacophony Society of San Francisco is fairly obvious from this point of view. It was Zone Trip 4 in 1990 when the Man built by James and Harvey was taken to the Playa for the first time. I think it was Danger Ranger who drew the line on the Playa that year. Over time, the Man took on a central role to the disappointment of some long time Cacophony Society members, particularly John Law, who dropped out of
Burning Man for that and other reasons.

I wonder the derivation of "Zone Trip" to be used in any context. I know if you take public transit, you can buy a pass to take you anywhere in the city. Then if you go beyond the city to a farther away "zone" you need to pay extra for the "zone trip".

Good to see you're lurking about, robot.

Aand yes... I second robotland and highly recommend reading "This Is Burning Man" for insight into Zone Trips and other early stuff. Other than that, Teo seemed to have summed it up pretty well.

I have always made an association between zone trips and the creation and exploration of temporary autonomous zones. http://www.hermetic.com/bey/taz_cont.html
They just seem to play well with each other.
