Mutant Vehicle advice: go-kart vs. atv ??

My girlfriend and I are going to do a giant Gloomy Bear mutant vehicle. We are wondering what is better to buy. The frame on the "yerf dogs" are going to go best with our design. Someone told me that go-karts or bad on the playa. I would like to avoid getting an ATV.

Please let me know any advice or what you think the best vehicle to design around on. I'm looking to spend no more then $1200 on vehicle.

Good idea. They're HIGHLY discouraged and I imagine the only way you'd be granted a permit for it is if were mutated in a spectacular way. Same to be said of karts.

I'd suggest you go ahead and write the BRC DMV and find out for sure that eiter one (or both) will not be acceptable as the rules change each year and my take could be wrong.

go carts typically are both underpowered and have little clearence. if you hit a dune, your screwed.

id suggest a golf cart myself. its probably about as useless as a go-cart, but much cheaper

I did write them and both are allowed as long as it is mutated enough.

Go carts are typically made to go fast and so are difficult to or impossible to run below the 5mph speed limit. I think the riding lawnmower chassis is the best option. Simple with gear selection and they are cheap if found with a bad deck. Running at just over an idle should give you the right speed in one of the top gears. The frame makes a good place to mount anything that needs to be sturdy.

A riding mower would be a great base vehicle. I don't know how much has changed, since I volunteered for the DMV, but the basic rule of thumb, for hotties that inspect your art car..is that its radically modified and that it looks nothing like the base vehicle. We have passed ATV's in the past, but reluctantly.

Because atvs have so little structure, they lend themselves to some shapes very well.
Some can barely be detected even up close.
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with any particular vehicle.
I would think an atv would cost more than a pickup though.
They seem to be insanely overpriced.
I suspect most people using them, already have them.

Go karts are kind of low for most shapes.
And I wouldn't want to be that close to the dust.

My favorite mvs are the small ones, but it takes much more effort to be clever with something small.
