difference between an 80% black shadecloth & a regular s

Post by dkskyy » Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:25 am

So, I gave in and decided to go the shade cloth route. I know aluminet is the best but it's a bit beyond my price range so I opted for 80% black shade cloth. I read online and it seemed that lots of folks said that between aluminet and shade cloth it's comparable.

I finally got it today and I'm a bit skeptical. Doesn't black attract heat? How is shade cloth better than a white sheet?

I used a regular bedsheet last year with holes cut in for ventilation and well, I slept ok till like 10 or 11 each day. I called Gemplers and I wasn't given an explanation I could understand about the benefits of shade cloth. I'm hoping someone here can help.

I know there's lots of talk about shade out there but I haven't really seen discussion about using a regular large bedsheet, or two sewn together to make them stronger.

Thanks!
Dominique

Black also blocks light well and releases heat well too.
Expect a 50% reduction in heat with 80% cloth.

Reflective is better, but black or green can work.

Any color shade cloth will turn playa beige in two days.

Remember that shade cloth at best has an SPF of 4.

The black cloth has UV resistance to the rays that make it absorb heat.

Sure, it gets warm, but nothing like black leather does, and the heat won't be felt by you unless you are wearing it.

Most of the shade DPW uses is black, either woven geotextile or knit shade cloth. Yes, it gets dusty, just like everything else. Yes, it radiates heat, just like anything hanging over your head. But it's cheap and it shades the ground underneath so the ground radiates less heat through the day and evening.

Worry about something else, like how to tie knots or something.

Good point, I do have more problems with knots than having shade over my head.
