cultural divide?

Post by LittleLebowski » Thu Sep 10, 2009 2:24 pm

I've never been to Burning Man, but from what I've observed in this forum and seen from people who have been, it almost seems like there are two different types of people who may clash on the playa.
So I'm asking, is it hard for the "titties and beer" people, and the "dirty hippies" to get along? (no offense meant by either, but you get the idea). What do you think the percentage is of people who are just there to get fucked up and point at naked people?
I try not to judge people, it just seems like it would be hard to "let go" in a mixed environment like that. When you think about it, everyone is there to have a good time... Enlighten me?

it isn't hard to avoid the obnoxious 'titties & beer' crowd, they tend to arrive just for the weekend and follow (like lemmings) the large sound/fire events...the 'dirty hippies' are pervasive, but mellow - not so 'in your face' about it all...

Hushville's neighbors included, among many fine folk, dirty hippies. The hippies left crap all over, even asking us if we could haul their trash out. Not fucking likely. A Husher moved camp to get away from the pervasive hippie drumming.

TittyMan, not to be confused with T&B people, was a wonderful and considerate neighbor, moving his gennies and trying not to play music too loud at night. Some of his camp weren't pleased we were across the street, but they got that the village was placed and they chose the open camping near us.

The T&B folk, in my experience, are open to education and negotiation. The hippies near us were not. Therefore I'd have to draw the conclusion I'd rather have yahoos than hippies as neighbors. Yahoos have the ability to become Good Little Burners. Hippies are untrainable.

I'm neither a hippie nor a beer drinker. That leaves curmudgeon. Get off my lawn.

There are more than titties and beer and dirty hippies. And even curmudgeon.
Um. Whacked out artists--even some artistes, I fear.
Manic builders.
Motivational speakers.
And oodles more.

You're not reading between the lines. The hippies and yahoos are the most consistently annoying groups, so they get the most heat on the boards. Who cares if they get on with each other? They can't get on with everyone else, and that is the root of their infamy. See, it's not the hippies complaining about yahoos and yahoos complaining about history that you are reading. It's every body else complaining about one or both groups.

Titties are overrated after the first 5 minutes.. are some idiots that come looking for that... but I think/hope they leave disappointed. Its NOT a free for all. Arrive with NO expectations.

I noticed a lot of yahoos arriving on Friday this year, they were out on the Playa in force in the afternoon. We ventured over to OT on Friday and only stayed a few minutes cos of the yahoos who were being total assholes pushing and shoving on the dance floor, not to mention getting ridiculously wasted. It's a totally different vibe to midweek.

oh I'm positive that there are many different types of people and that most people don't fit into a category. It was just an example. Like for instance, if you're trying to have a deep spiritual moment and suddenly you hear someone yelling "TITTIEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!"... that might suck.

Or if you're trying to party and some tree hugger comes up to you and blames some random moop on you or something.

Anything could happen I guess. I was just curious to get people's takes on it. I will keep my personal prejudices to myself. :D

In the feet-in-the-dust, wind-in-the-hair real playa, "hippy" is a jocular term of endearment. Just so you know.

OK, so I'm an old hippy who likes titties and beer, drumming, exploding objects, dancing to loud music, doing volunteer work, and even a few quiet moments in the deep playa. Categories be damned!

I would just like to say that now that I read the thread about the temple and how people were being totally disrespectful during its burning, that's EXACTLY the kind of thing I meant. Now I at least feel prepared.

The watchword is vigilance, people. There's a lot of work to do here on this forum. Equilibrium must be maintained in this equation:

Hippies and treehuggers are by no means the same group. To be honest, the intersection of those two groups seems to get smaller every year.

Eplaya is not the playa. You do not get even a sample of a taste of a flavor of the event here. People carp about the damned hippies or whatever here, sometimes joking sometimes not, and it sounds like we're all in a small room hating on each other. Not so at all. Not even close. There are hippies, ravers, yahoos, punks, artists, builders, crazies, druggies, 12 steppers, circus people, tourists, makers, curmudgeons, and freaks of any description all out in a jolly stew spread across nine square miles of playa, art, and camps.

For me the mix of people getting their crazy on in their wild diversity of styles is one of the greatest beauties of the place.

Bitching about what other people say about them seems to be number one on the hippie priority list.

Next to being a fucking hippie, that is.

Once you've realized you've squandered a fortune to squat in the desert on the wrong end of Nevada to watch a big wooden man get burned in the middle of the night, in the company of thousands of men in tutus and sarongs, then how the hell can you take anything seriously?

the 'dirty hippies' are pervasive, but mellow - not so 'in your face' about it all...

i beg to differ.

some old coot, totally naked, wandered into our KITCHEN while we were EATING totally unaware that his DIRTY SCHLONG was inches from our meal, gibbering on about how hungry he was and wow we had a great set-up and could he hit that bowl we were smoking and wow, what a great dome, etc etc etc.

lucky they install a shock collar on me at the beginning of the week because i almost killed him with my spork before they zapped me into unconsciousness.

keep your dirty hippy to yourself and those of your ilk....i DO NOT WANT A FUCKING HUG OR A CHAKRA ADJUSTMENT.....EVER.

please respect my 3 foot circle of sanitary.

dont touch me unless i say it's alright, you may get an elbow to the face, it's just a hair-trigger reaction i have when i smell patchouli.

of course, if you are a beautiful hippy GIRL with nice TITTIES, then it is entirely a different story.

it is what it is, i yam what i yam.

deal with it.

and keep your unwashed male genitalia the fuck away from me and my food.
