The Care and Feeding of Drums on the Playa?

Post by Dusza Beben » Tue Mar 16, 2004 3:52 am

I'm going to be bringing my wood and hide drum to the high desert from the steamy midwest. Anybody experience any drum problems? (other than sleep deprivation  )

I hope all drumers bring there drums. Hope they can find a meeting/playing/druming spot. It's ok if it is next door to me. I sleep well to drums.

My friend Mason and I will be, hopefully, hosting a theme camp near the Reality Plaza at 9:00 ish from the Man (Reality and Dogma there abouts) so keep an eye out for our camp in the 2004 registry down the road... it will have something to do with Muppets. ;)

Along similiar lines; I've heard that taking a natural drum on an airplane can mess it up - any info on this? Maybe the low temps (or pressure drop???) I have a friend who swears putting a drum into an airplane cargo bay will destroy it (based on personal experience).

As far as your question, maybe undo a couple of knots to loosen it up, then tighten it back up when you arrive as needed?

Thanks for the input, I think loosening it up may be the ticket.

hellos,

if you are taking a djembe type drum then loosening it up almost all the way is the trick. i normally de tune mine then retune it once i hit the playa, then tune as needed.

also, keep it in shady spots, covered and dont leave it in a hot car. I once had a drum head rip in two after leaving the drum in a hot tent with it over tightened.
