cold sores/fever blisters
Seems like I get a cold sore every time I shave. I got one 3 days ago, and my girlfriend insisted I put a piece of YELLOW onion on it. I cut a 1 inch square, of one layer...scraped the inner membrane to get to the juice. Held it to my cold sore for 5 minutes evey half hour or so. And the damned things nearly gone!
Why eplaya? I get em every year after burning man. For some reason, my lips hate uber dry environments. Hope it helps!

I suffer from coldsores and have tried everything.
If you want to go the pharmaceutical route, you can use Valtrex, which is a herpes medication. I used to use it, but switched to l-lysine, which is an amino supplement that you can pick up at any health food store. I have found l-lysine to be very effective at preventing cold sores. If I feel one coming up, I take it for about a week and it prevents it.
Cold sores seem to be stimulated by arginine, which is found in foods such as nuts. When I cut back on those foods, I found my cold sores reduced.
Here's some info to get you started, very interesting reading: http://hubpages.com/hub/Lysine_and_Cold_Sores
Good luck.

I tried Valtrex and my system seems to reject it ... messily.brcprincess wrote:I suffer from coldsores and have tried everything.

OTC Abreva works well, as does Denevir. A dab early on and the sores are gone. I have both, and the Denevir kicks ass. I was in on the clinical trials, nothing ever has worked as well.

I have used abreva after catching cold sores from other people in the past many(150-ish?) times.
It works great.
The only complaint I have is keeping that tiny-ass little tube from getting lost.
I still keep a pickle shoved in my mouth at all times when shaving, even when I don't have them, just to be safe.

Yeah I lost that tiny tube as well. I do take l-lysene before burning man, and it helped last time...2008. On a whim...or just to get cait to shut up, I tried the yellow onion, and was impressed.oneeyeddick wrote:I have used abreva after catching cold sores from other people in the past many(150-ish?) times.

You only "catch" one cold sore in your life, after that any more cold sores that you get are flare-ups of the same virus - HSV-1 - so you are correct that it never goes away, but HSV-1 (cold sores) and HSV-2 (genital herpes) are different viruses and aren't cross-transmitable (if that is a word...). In some cases HSV-1 can move to different parts of the body, particularly on the face (even eyes - yuck!), but you can't give someone genital herpes by going down on them during an HSV-1/cold sore outbreak. You might give them HSV-1 if they don't already have it, but HSV-2 - nope. Just wanted to clear that up a littleUgly Dougly wrote:Once you have it, it never really goes away. And if you go down during a flare-up, chances they will get it down south as well!
What fun!

HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but it more commonly causes infections of the mouth and lips, so-called “fever blisters.â€

I have a friend (not a burner so she isn't identifiable here) who has HSV-1 in her genital area. Poor thing is miserable and in a lot of pain as any outbreak appears in both places simultaneously. I am so glad I just have cold sores on my mouth only. Except when they crawl down my chin... and I had them across my cheek once. Ouchie.

Can you have both at once?
Why does it have to have another "host" to move from one spot to another, instead of just sneaking its way up or down through the blood stream or across the skin?
Why is our sex education so bad that I have to learn this stuff here in the playground?

Somebody should make this a *sticky* topic under the heading "flesh-eating bacteria & viruses -- welcome home!".

well well...guess I need to have another little chat with my doctor about this subject, sorry I was misinformed! My son contracted HSV-1 as an infant and had the most horrible outbreak all over his face, so we discussed the subject in great detail. It was my understanding that there is a difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2, but if like some of you say, you in fact can get HSV-1 in the genital area, then what difference is there?

Okay, I know I've been having fun with this, but I'm going to be serious for this post. There may be differences in the make up of the viruses that are apparent on the electron microscope or genetic typing level. Heck, for all I know they aren't even closely related. I would also guess that each has a preference although they can manifest in either location. I suggest that you find a better source of information than a bunch of loons on a bbs board, after all this concerns th health and happiness of your son.ConnieH wrote:well well...guess I need to have another little chat with my doctor about this subject, sorry I was misinformed!
