Is it wrong

Post by Lucid484 » Sun Sep 27, 2009 9:05 pm

To hate 99% of all human beings......I mean seriously most of our specie is completely retarded. I know its a major generalization but working in retail and seeing thousands of peopel day in and day ot gives me very little hope for our kind!

If only the rest of the world were like burners.

Then the world could not keep up with the demand for patchouli (sp), blinking things, tarps, or otter pops.

Heres a good PSA for all those Burners out there.

You don't belong in retail. I know that it's hard to shift and find something else, but it's going to make you miserable if you don't. My job aint perfect, but it's a blessing not to be in public contact.

As for the rest of it, misanthropy is old, old, old. If it's good enough for Dr. Johnson, it's good enough for you. Although I have to say that the feeling of alienation from your own species, especially your own social species, can become a burden. But wrong in a moral sense? No.

Lucid is in the Hadley/Amherst/North Hampton area which has a west coast feel to it. I think that there is a fair amount of interbreeding in that area which may be the problem. This is very different than the true Massholes---we are a few hours east of this area!

As far as the retail customers, they suffer from what I call "the Walmart mentality". Customers that have no life and think that it's their job to torment retail clerks with stupid question and indignant attitudes. Some of these people buy/use/return on a regular basis, return old crap for a refund and basically try to play every game imaginable. If you even give a hint of questioning them, they ask to see the manager, who apologizes and gives them whatever they want.

To work retail, I think you must have really thick skin and take on some sort of "I don't give a shit" attitude just to get by. At least the huge paychecks help to take the sting out of some of the annoyances!

Re-entry into Defaultia can be difficult. Especially when one has misanthropic tendencies (I know, I speak from experience). But labeling everything non "Burner" wrong is wrong. This is a lesson I've been learning after three years of going to the desert.

One of the things I love most about BRC is how those with the propensity for independent thought, unusual creativity, and unpretentious friendliness, seem to make up the majority of the population - rather than the minority, like most places I've been. But you can still find that element in most 'normal' cities. One of the changes I've made in these last few years is moving to a neighborhood where I feel that kind of mentality. The rent may be a bit higher, but the quality of life is worth it. (And yes - surprise! - a lot of my neighbors are Burners)

My point is that like-minded people exist in most communities. The trick is finding them. Have you checked to see if there is a regional group in your area? If not, there's likely some collaboration of artists or cacophonists or some similar branch of delicious weirdness... my challenge to you is to find where those who share your interests and mentality meet and check it out :)

Well I'm a manager and make a pretty decent pay check lol. and getting out of retail won't really work...make too much to risk getting a different job and thanks to my states massive child support payments its just not possible. was going to stay in the militray but my wife and both my kids begged me not to for fear of deployment.

And yeah Northampton/Amherst is about as close to San Franciso that you can get.

Not to mention the ghetto/welfare towns of springfield and holyoke that are right over the bridge from me. of which I would not mind if the govt. used as bombing ranges!

but the weird thing is that even though I hate most people i'd still be willing to join back into the service and put my life on the line to protect them

Maybe its because i'm a gemini...i have equal amounts of love/hate in me lol

I would submit "destroyed the planet" to be sort of wrong...........

I might also submit, perhaps, there have been other intelligent beings living here........

changed it's balances? yup

but, "destroyed" if I understand your meaning, is only related to how you (and others, I'm sure), perceive the earth and what it should provide you, and, how you think it should be............

A comet "destroyed" the earth, for the dinosaurs (if you subscribe to that theory, which, I do), but, left it better for, eventually, us.........

many mass extinctions have occurred that we know of.........and, it always came out ok later...........for another set of beings........

perhaps, what we are doing is making Earth unlivable for us, which, to the earth, matters not..........(or, is good, depending on whether you ascribe consciousness and or sentience to the earth).

yeah i mean the earth will be destroyed no matter what...and our sun will also cease to exist. so no amount of being green or eco friendly will ever save it...and hasn't the earth been wiped of most all life 2 or 3 times anyway? and yet still comes back.....being green will make it more liveable for us in the longer run...but unless we can get off this rock its kind of fruitless.

and yeah capitalism completely goes against saving the planet...its so much more economical in the short term to rape and pillage and sell it than it does to work to keep renewing it.the people who are greedy and love to make money off the planet know that they will be dead in a relativly short period of time, so fuck it destroy the shit out of it and be filthy rich while they are still alive to enjoy it.

in the spirit if discussion, not to contradict you specifically:

I disagree that capitalism goes against saving the planet.

I'd say short sighted, greedy people who don't care about saving the planet are the culprits.

Be they socialist, communist, or capitalist.........their economic system is not the issue.
A (IMHO) smart capitalist, (or anyone), uses and preserves that which supports them.
selective logging, fishing, mining........
sustainable farming, ranching, fishing (again),
recycling, reusing.

you get the idea.

Capitalism can and should do all of the above.

some haven't.
What sort of stewards were the Soviets? China? North Korea? etc, etc......?
no better, and, I'd submit (especially now), worse.

I do though, think that capitalism is the way out of what we're in. Because, it promotes success and achievement, more so than communism..........as long as people wake up to what they're doing to the future, it would generate healing faster, through profit incentive and striving to succeed.

IMHO, that is........

Lucid I know that you are in one of the finest parts of Mass(East Coast). I was raised in South Hadley myself. I have lived out west for almost 17 years now. I am a much healthier, happier and saner person because of my decision to make the west my home. The thing about the Connecticutt river valley is that you have such a weird potpourri of people. You've got open-mindedness in Noho/Amherst mixed with the ignoramus of the frat boys. Not to mention, as you have already, the downtrodden people of the nasty cities(Holyoke,Springfield,Chicopee). Keep your head up man there is a place for you out here on the west coast.

Goods and services. basically how capitalism started out. Everyone has a reason to be there, shoppers and employees alike. Think about it, most people shop everyday, and have no idea how retail operates or what it is like to work in retail. From my experience, I had no clue what it would really be like to work in retail, 2000-2001 bubble burst, and I applied for a job. I thought it would be no stress, no big decisions, no headache. HA HA HA HA HA HA aaah heeee heee. ahem.

Most stores base their payroll (employee hours) on sales. In a big box store with low sales, this might mean that there are only two people per department per day, hopefully an opener and a closer. What if someone is sick, or has a scheduled day off? or the only person there has to take a lunch break? Perhaps there won't be anybody in the dept, and then the person walking by gets asked to help out. Fewer employees on the floor means less service, less downstocked product, less recovery and neatness. The size of the area doesn't change, the amount of product to maintain doesn't change, the attitudes of the customers get worse. Some customers think there is a room full of dopey people somewhere in the store where all the employees go to avoid doing their jobs, and they think it is helpful to tell any employee they see.

I resent the notion that an I don't care attitude is what everyone in retail must cultivate. "I don't care" is the attitude most people have and they happen to bring it to work with them, and many think it is appropriate. Unfortunately I cannot say "would you start caring if I gave you one more chance before I fired your ass?"

I work in a hardware store. I get to scheme about building stuff all day. I know where things are, and I know how a lot of it works.

I remember my local hardware store, and the people who worked there. I loved going there when I was a kid and hanging out and listening to the old guys. I don't think it was sucking their souls dry to work there. They also didn't see it as a way to pass the time until their house was on MTV Cribs.

its a grocery store... i was an assistant grocery manager in january and the company "restructured" and laid off a bunch of people....now Im a manager of 5 departments...my store manager is cutting all our hours left and right (we all think to make her yearly bonus)...my part time help sucks! (college kids who dont care) and they wont let me hire anyone else...Im busting my ass and I had managers who were above me before now working under me still making 2-6 dollars an hour more than me!!!!

life was simple when I was a part timer...had enough money to get by and enjoy life...then of course you feed into marketing and you need to buy things and have kids and need cars to get to work and it spirals out of control and you need higher paying jobs just to survive OH MY GOD!!!! lol
