I thought this would be a cool idea to do inside of a dome, but it would need a good screen on the inside with smooth edges, I think.

what about one using a smoke machine and a projector for out on the playa?
I feel more like I do now than I did before

Too much wind for a smoke machine to work well on the open playa. There's a number of people who project stuff onto the inside of structures so that it's visible from inside and out, with cool effect.

I wouldn't worry too much about the edges being perfect and such. Generally speaking bigger, brighter, and louder are more important than polish IMHO.
