mutant vehicles, I want one!!

Post by Disaster Chick » Fri Feb 12, 2010 12:17 pm

We live in Florida and want a mutant vehicle for Burning Man. Is there anyone near Reno that we can rent a mutant vehicle from this year?

Sure, just call Hertz or Avis.

Since it isn't like people bust their asses to create their own personal art cars and vehicles for Burning Man, there should be plenty sitting around to rent.

You could prolly rent a garage in the area, develop the skills, fly in and out, buy the materials, and build one.

Or use your garage and rent a trailer to haul your MV out.

Rent an MV? That'd be a good one... come to Honest Sue's Used Mutant Vehicles, have we got a deal for you...

I mean... it's bad enough to deal with the hell of renting BIKES for the playa and the resulting moop... not only that, but you're taking someone's hard work and they're trusting it to you.. It's like renting a Picasso.

And we're not even to the part about getting it registered by DMV...

Ha ha ha ha ha! It happened again.

Think about what the best possible mutant vehicle you want to rent would be. That is your concept. Draw and plan it out and then build it. It will be one of the most rewarding things you can do. Don't forget to apply for the permit to bring it in to the city.

Or buy one.

I'll help.

I have had a mutant vehicle for 9 years in a row, and I live in Reno.

No, you can't rent mine.

Anyone that has one is going to be using it themself, and there is a big application process at the Department of Mutated Vehicles(DMV) at Burning Man that you have to go through in order to have the privelage of driving it out there.

There is no such place that rents Mutant Vehicles, not even in Reno,as they are usually not street legal, especially once it is on the Playa and properly mutated to meet the currant standards of the DMV.

Like BBsue said, it is like renting someone else's art, and then trying to represent it as something you did.

You can occasionally find mutant vehicles for sale on Craigslist, but after you purchase it you will still have to go through the process of filling out an application, and then you might or might not get permission to bring it out there, where it still has to go through the DMV to get approved once you are there.

It really says something if you built it yourself, and you can bet your ass they will hold it against you if you state in your application that you purchased it from someone else just for your own personal usage.

What... you thought I was being facetious or something? I was dead serious.

Your odds of getting someone to "rent" an MV is like nil, in a venue where 99+% of the people eschew commerce. Then, you're talking hundreds of hours, and in a lot of cases thousands of $$$ to build a Playa Legal MV. Unless you have a friend who is willing to let you borrow one of theirs... which is a HUGE leap of faith. And then you have to learn how to run it.

I have friends who truck their MV's across the country to get them home every year. To buy your way into this Fraternity.sorority (of which I happen to be a member) is like really unlikely.

And if that's not help, or advice you're willing to listen to... then that just shows how much I'd trust you with MY MV...

Let the popcorn flow!

Ok, really, seriously, you people need to get over yourselves. While I would love to build one and haul it out there, that just won't work. So I was thinking that maybe there was one around from previous years that someone wasn't using which would make the trek around the playa a bit easier for someone with mobility issues.

So, be mean if that makes you feel superior, be self riotous if it makes you feel good. But just remember, one day you might be older, you might need help getting around and I hope you never run into someone like yourselves.

Well, just wondering how to help an older person in our party get around a bit easier...........But really, there's no reason to be condescending or nasty about it. Some of us have a life outside of burning man and simply to do not have the time to build one or drive it out there. I was never one for joining the Junior league, even a Burning Man Junior League.........guess that just makes me a normal person, with a normal life, who wants to help a friend experience something.

Disaster Lady, if you have mobility issues, and already have handicapped parking permission with the state you drive in , then you can simply use a golf cart(which you can rent in Reno), or even your own vehicle, for that matter.

No mutation is required, although you get much applause if you do mutate it to some degree.

And yes , some of us have inflated egos, in regards to having an MV, and some of us are just inflated..........

The application process starts on the 17th of this month, you will have to register an account for this(it's separate from Eplaya).

I think you have until the end of June(?) to get it done.

Here is the link for that

Good luck !!

Just double checked, for handicapped vehicles you get until July 31st, but the longer you wait, the longer you will have to wait to get your approval.

Hey, DisasterChick... you failed to mention senior/mobility issues in your original post, this accounts for the snark...
read it again, and know that most everyone WANTS access to an MV, but the commitment is huge...
Good luck, and welcome!!

The fact that you are working on transport for a disabled person changes everything. I know you would not have got as much snark if you mentioned that right off the bat.

I purchased, modified and have brought to burning man twice now a golf cart for a camp mate who can not get around normally. I know a little about golf cars so feel free to use me as a resource if you have questions.

Golf carts are a very good solution for people who have a hard time getting around. The gas ones are the best. Mine probably goes through 10 gallons the entire week and it gets used a bunch every day.

What are your plans for transportation to burning man? Driving? Flying and driving? Fill us in on the details and we will be able to help you brainstorm more.

Gas is definately the best, and lock up your golf cart when you're not using. All golfcarts have the same key, so any joker can joyride it if you don't protect yourself.

Right should have mentioned the mobility issue first. But really, what good did the snarking do? Sort of defeats the whole feeling of Burning Man to me. But I guess those people are out there no matter where you go. Just glad it's big place!

Thanks much to those that did help me with this. I remember seeing people on golf carts and smaller ATVs so I figured there had to be a way. For those snarkers out there, yes, we plan to bring supplies with us to dress it up. Happy now??

I don't know, for me, the feeling of Burning man being what PEOPLE MAKE THEMSELVES would be defeated by folks asking where they could get ('cause they wanted one) or rent works of art that they have no personal investment in.

Sorry if this experience harshed your day.
We can be snarky as all get out here but we will be your best ally on playa. A big part of ePlaya is the playful ribbing we give newcomers. That gets turned up or down depending on how relatively new posters present themselves. Now that we know what you are trying to accomplish we will help.
If I were still employed I would buy that broken golf cart I have been eyeing on CraigsList, fix it and bring it to the burn for you to use. I love helping people and tinkering with golf carts that much! Oh man I really like golf carts! In fact I am making a pedal powered one to bring to the burn.

The most important thing you need to get a disabled vehicle license is a state issued disabled parking placard. This is the one thing that DMV will ask you to present when you show up there with your vehicle to get your sticker. It is also necessary to have all information off of the placard at the time of application for the license/sticker/permit thingie. If the individual you are helping does not have a disabled placard one needs to be procured soon. I am sure any sane Dr. would grant one once the vastness of BRC is described and the fact that it is a restricted driving city.
You also need to know the make and model of the vehicle that will be used as the disabled vehicle. The email you will get from the DMV allowing you to bring the vehicle in to BRC must accompany the vehicle through the gate and be brought to DMV with you. It is a pretty straight forward process. If you have already read through the DMV stuff then you probably already know all of this.

If whatever you bring breaks down come get me at BRC Welding and Repair and I will do what I can to get it up and running again. Or you can just stop bye for some shade and a couple cold beers. It would be a perfect opportunity to elbow me in the ribs and wag a finger at me if necessary. :)

No one was mean or self-righteous... you asked an absolutely outrageous question, and got the correct answers to the original inquiry.
What to do about helping someone who doesn't get around well depends on a few things. Does the person have the disabled permit for their car? Is it a wheelchair-bound person?

I should have clarified my question, but I already said that, didn't I? Yes, they have a handicapped permit.

As for an outrageous question, it was simply a question, obviously from someone new to Burning Man. Good news is some of you realized this and helped me. Others........well, lets just say in your opinion, my question was outrageous and in my opinion you were rude and pompous......

But now I know what to do, with the help of a few good folks that don't take themselves so seriously.......seriously lighten up!

It is possible to rent an up to date mutant vehicle or pay to have one done.
Renting one is comparable to renting a race car, also possible.

If you have a disability permit, and limited funds, I suggest trying to buy or rent an out of date mutant vehicle or one that didn't make the cut, especially if you have some ideas to improve it.
They are out there.

Your satisfaction with your approach is your own business, and not the purview of the dmv.

Like a race car, the best ones will be hardest to get, and the more money and/or trust will be involved.
Driving on the playa can be exceedingly difficult, especially at night, comparable to traffic in Calcutta, but with more carelessness.

Or as a last resort, just strap an old boat on top of a lawnmower and call it a day.

Hi Disaster Chick,

It’s very cool that you’re trying to help out a camp member to get around. Since you’ve clarified your intent, I hope you don’t’ take some of the posts personally. It should be stated that every year someone comes on the board, (usually doesn’t take the time to get to know the place), and asks for something like to buy, rent, and yes… even borrow a Mutant Vehicle. All the previous instances of this happening that I know of have been people who have no idea about what it means to get a Mutant Vehicle on the playa and just want an easy way to have what they see others enjoying.

What you’ll find here on eplaya, given enough time hanging around, is a group that will help you at great lengths to accomplish your goals. This same group will also defend you veraciously if they feel that your hard work is being taken for granted. To lighten up would be to loose some of that fire.

I really do hope you'll stay around and join in. There’s several good discussions on topics that you might find helpful, including this one here.
