I've been stashing a beer out of every 6 or 12 pack I bought all year, so when I'm out on the hot playa I could have a wide selection of seasonal varieties of beer. But I was just drinking a beer and noticed on the side that it says best before 08/04/10. Is all the beer I've saved gonna be bad before the burn? I thought you could age beer? Its all been in a cupboard not the fridge, it should be fine right?

Nope.

Lagers are best stored at 40-50 degrees.

Ales at 50-55 degrees.

Beers that are aged are brewed especially for aging. Usually they are high gravity beers.

Unless you have a spare fridge set on low cooling, find the coldest deepest closet in your home and hope for the best.

almost all beers will have a "best if used by" date.

your best bet is to put away a few bucks every week and make a trip to the store and buy a bunch of beers before the burn.

does n e 1 know if some of these breweries deliver via mailorder?

i know some day im going to venture away from the beer haven that is Oregon here and im gonna want some of my microbrews delivered.

I'm glad my Tequila doesn't get skunky if not kept cold......

In fact, I can only think of one intoxicant that is good when skunky...it isn't beer.

Me too. Nobody would come within 20 feet of me for two days. Ruined my suade coat and everything I was wearing. From that point forward skunks were (and still are) the only creatures I accellerate in to when I see one crossing the road. I hate those bastards.

Had to release skunks from the cat traps in my old back yard many times.

It doesn't smell so pretty when it's fresh, but it still doesn't small like a pickle.

if you pick a skunk up so it's back legs are not on the ground, it can't spray you..........

I agree.
Though there is still one problem. A beer skunks pretty quick (especially American Lagers that are 'brewed cold, kept cold"), so if you buy a shit ton of beer at home, how are you going to keep it cold the entire drive to Nevada? Packing that much extra ice and coolers isn't really feasible (for me at least). Keeping the AC on in the car helps but really isn't enough. Also once you get to BRC, it would be very hard to keep all that beer cold the whole time.
So the next option is to pick a beer that doesn't taste terrible if it gets warm. I personally feel that the cheap beers tend to fit this description best: PBR and Keystone light are my personal favorites. Tecate also seems to do alright.

What if you had a powered cooler full of cold beer, and asked people to bring their warm beer in exchange for a cold beer. After a while, you'd have a crazy collection!

But once their beer got warm it would be skunked. Once a beer is tainted it cannot be fixed.

you have to save the "skunky" beer to drink after you are already drunk when it doesn't matter anymore.

True. Start with Whiskey and work to skunky beer. Or start with watery beer so when it gets skunky it tastes like real beer. Hence, Keystone light.

Reckon you're right. If I have a room-temperature beer, then it's likely I know whether it's gotten hot, etc., but an unknown beer from a stranger may have been rode hard and put away wet if you follow my drift.
