As far as I know, what they were doing was looking for open access points so they could map various hotspots so if someone needed a place to connect and were in a city or part of town strange to them, they could look on the map and find an open access point near them.
Trouble is, a lot of these access points are in people's homes and they have not bothered to secure them. They don't have an archive of your computer but they probably have a (very) brief snapshot of any open traffic that happened to be emitted from your wireless access point at the moment the car was within range.
It is sort of like having all your windows open and shouting all day, then chastising someone walking up the sidewalk for overhearing.
Google does a LOT more nefarious stuff than this, jeez.
Ever wonder why if you go to a few car manufacturer sites you start seeing car ads every time you visit a website with google ads?
I did a google search the other day for scsi disk drives and now I see the same scsi disk ad no matter what site I go to and probably will for another week or so.
Google does basically exactly what Gator/Claria was so hated for doing. It is called "behavioral marketing". And it works.
