Walk-In Camping
Curious as to whether anyone has any experience with walk-in camping?
Advantages and disadvantages type stuff.
Searched but didn't find enough to scratch the itch. Thanks.

Major advantages in my POV are the distance from the noise and the fact you don't have to hear gennies... But I agree, when the wind picks up you'd damn well better have a well secured structure. ;-Psputnik wrote:Major disadvantages from my POV are the distance from the action and the fact that you are totally exposed and have no way to use your vehicle as a windbreak.

Some people are more sensitive to sleeping where there is generator exhaust/noise or where the ground is shaking from dub-step. I haven't had your experience that they don't want to be at Burning Man.Captain Goddammit wrote:My impression after years of BM-ing is that walk-in camping is for people that don't want to go to Burning Man!

Adv:
1. Quiet.
Disadv:
1. Long way to bike/hike to the Esplanade
2. Long way to bike/hike to major art
3. Long way to bike/hike to the Man
4. Long way to bike/hike to the Temple
5. Long way to hike to porta potties
6. Long way to bike/hike to buy ice
7. Long way to bike/hike to Center Camp
8. Less security.
9. Less shelter from wind and dust.
But, lots of people do it...YMMV.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

I like camping in the walk-in area, and I do like Burning Man.
The advantage is that it is a bit more quiet. Often (but not always) there is less dust, because there are no roads out there. There is a lot more space, for those who like that And no traffic.
The disadvantage is the distance from damn near everything. You have to be willing to walk or bike more than you would otherwise. And there is no cover from the wind.
I disagree with the "less security" aspect, since that depends mostly on how friendly and alert the neighborhood is. The group I camp with in the walk-in area has been doing this for years, so we take care of each other.
Based on who camps where, I'd have to say that the walk-in area is not for everyone, or even for a substantial chunk of the population. If you like camping, and you prefer the "tent" section to the "RV" section, and you don't mind an extra 5-10 minutes to get to the hub, then it might be just fine for you. Otherwise, you will more likely prefer the city.

Not always true. When I go camping, it either fits in my pack or it stays at home.bm_cricket wrote:So what you are saying is: City kids are city kids. Country folk are country folk. T'aint no diffr'n in Black Rock City!
When I got Burning Man it more like, yeah, I think the trailer can take another 400 pounds or so, but we're gonna need more straps.

I'm in the same boat but my pack is usually half empty when I hit the trail.CapSmashy wrote:Not always true. When I go camping, it either fits in my pack or it stays at home.

Still, for people who really demand the comforts of home I'm not sure walk-in is the way to go.
